So I am going away on holiday tomorrow.... I nip to the local shop and I am pulling back into the driveway and some little scrote clips the rear end of the XJS... Then speeds off! I reverse out from where I am and give chase, lasts about 5 minutes weaving through a housing estate and he eventually pulls over about a mile away realising I am not giving up. I pull in front of him and ask him what the f&^%ing hell he is playing at. Only to be followed 3 seconds later by his mother... She gives me all her details and it turns out they live about 750yds down the road from me!

They have asked to settle without insurance companies being involved as and I quote "His car is my delivery car" It is a white id 90's Civic in white with carbon black 17" alloys! So at best I suspect fronting at worse no insurance. In fairness it will be not much in the way of repairs as it has only damaged the black plastic sections not the chrome or the fog light. The only question is he hit right above the r/h exhaust so it could have pushed that out. I have it dropped off with my trusted garage already and they are letting me know how much and will do so while I am away as the owner is a very good very old friend.

Question is do I get the quote and see if they pay up or just report it. Frankly I am thinking it is likely to only be a few hundred quid so I would rather give them the chance to pay up. In fairness his mother looked like she was going to beat seven bells of ste out of him when he got home!

Put it through the insurance, they won't want to pay when they find out it is going to cost more than £10.

I wonder if she has informed his insurance company that the car is being used for business use?

XJS abuse - hang him smash

Personally I'd wait for the quote and if they pay up straight away settle it outside of insurance. At least the Jag's with your preferred garage that knows the car and you can trust them to spot any hidden problems. Job done, repaired properly with minimum of fuss.

Clearly they're keen to avoid going through the insurance company for whatever reason. My worry would be if you pressed the insurance issue they could start playing up - counter claims that you reversed into him etc etc. Everything becomes far more complicated and the car isn't sorted for a while.

In the meantime, my fingers are crossed that there's nothing worse hidden underneath. It pains me to see an XJS in distress.

Present them with the quote and see their reaction. Then decide where to go from there.

If you can avoid the insurance companies and they are willing to pay up it will be less stress plus your insurance will more than likely go up as well as you will have to declare the claim come renewal time.

If they start acting as arses then a little threat of reporting the business use and possible fronting may work in your favour

The fact that he tried to leg it would suggest to me that he's not insured. The likelihood of them paying you in full, if at all, id say is very slim. I'd have called the police and asked them to come out because of the failing to stop element.

I do get where you are coming from and as it goes I have had a gander at the house they live in (drove past earlier on the way back from dropping the Jag off) and it is pretty respectable. He honestly looked terrified when I stopped next to him and his mum seemed a reasonable woman and must have said sorry every other word while we were swapping details and it seemed pretty obvious he was getting a roasting on his return to the family residence! I know the details they gave me were right as I have also looked them both up on Facebook etc and he is only just 18 and has a reasonable job with a decent firm that is a good 30 miles from where we are and he seems to only have had it since July, so I have no desire to screw the kids life over by making driving no option for him based on a moronic lack of judgement and for being a tosser!

I may be a tusting imbecile and only time will tell but I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt and let them have a chance to play a straight bat without resorting to the official route.

Worst case for me I end up a few hundred quid out of pocket and have one more slice of trust in decent human nature cut away, which will piss me off but won't kill me!

I'm afraid this is where my mind was going.

Not to mention the fact that if the little s**t wasn't going to stop, why should you help them out by not reporting it to your insurer?

Jesus Christ, Never made a mistake in your life then ? FFS he is 18, they live less than a mile away, so he isn't going anywhere. Hardly a scrote is he...

OK he drove off, chances are it was his first bump and he panicked. Family are involved now and him certain that they will set him straight.

Hope the car is ok.

This is pretty much my take as it goes, and the car will be fine it is in the grand scheme of things a minor bump and has done no more than superficial damage by the looks of it. At worst I am expecting some minor exhaust damage but it was a glancing blow and I would be surprised.

We have all made mistakes I smacked my first car within 23hrs of having it, albeit no body else involved and it cost me £300 and a dented pride, we all live and learn, I did and hopefully so will he.

If you were going to follow this up next week then I'd be inclined to give them a chance to pay up. However, as you are going away for two weeks (so probably nearer three weeks 'til you get the chance to get back in touch with them), then this does give them a lot of time to try and either wriggle out of it, or deny it entirely and tell you to prove it was him.

Unless you are prepared to foot the bill yourself, and hopefully get it back from the lad, then I'd inform the insurance, just to get something official down somewhere if they do deny it.

Hope the little scrote pays up and learns from it!!!!

I took copious pictures on my phone of them both when and where they stopped, damage to both cars etc so they would struggle to deny it!
