Where would the PH community stand on this idea:

Keep the speed cameras, but remove the fines. Stick with the points (3 for minor, 6 major and ban for gross).

Surely if we could be sure the cameras aren't there to generate money we'd be happy enough to support them.

This is my whole arguement for more Bobbies and less cameras...

If you are doing a bit over the speed limit on a quiet road at 2.00am the camera will flash you and you'll get a NIP in the post. If a police officer was to stop you in the same circumstances at that time and your attitude was 'in order' then you would get away with a ticking off 9 of out 10 times..

0-60 mph in 2.8secs, 185mph top speed...

No, you are missing the point. By and large speed cameras have no other function than for revenue. They clearly do not improve road safety, a fact born out in the anual death rate since their intorduction.

Please tell me why travelling at 80mph PERFECTLY SAFELY on a quiet motorway in fine conditions (see my post severn bridge hidden camera) should land you with a NIP and three points on your licence?

They will never never make the punishment points only and no fine anyway. There's far too much easy money to be made to ever give it up. Money for nothing.
