What do members suggest is a good way of dealing with police at the roadside?

What tricks or ideas have proved successful to avoid a ticket/ROS?

You will have to stop using local jargon

Many (including myself) will not know what ROS means.

There are many pieces of jargon that I could use that no one would understand unless they happen to work in my Police area .

Best piece of advice or trick I have found is 'Don't get pulled in the first place'

Hi Gone..

Thanks for the advice...

ROS, for those who don't know, is: Report on Summons. ie: Being reported straight to the Magistrates Court and not being given the opportunity to have a Fixed Penalty Ticket.

Like a few others on here, I'm a copper and it's always interesting how different drivers react to being stopped. Also, how those reactions can mean the difference between prosecution or not. Afterall, Education is always better than Enforcement.

If you believe that, you'll believe anything...
Only joking

Seeing as the police "dont need a reason" to pull you, apart from being a model citizen while theyre around theres nothing you can do to avoid it.

Best not to be an ass and try and be clever, unless theyre being that way with you, and even then, best just to make notes of whats said/done and make your complaint (if any) later when they least expect a comeback.

Incidentally i was once pulled by a trafpol (2 up) and accepted the "offer" of a seat in the back.
When asked why i was being pulled, i answered "no idea".
The driver stated that they were concerned about my speed although they couldnt have seen me when i was exceeding the limit.
Anyway, not having had enough time to PP me or vascar they let me go with the words "its your lucky night".....kind of rankled a bit as i wasnt being a nob, just minding my own business.

Christ this site is becoming like the Canteen at Hendon.

Next step a Federation Rep?

ROS - should that not be R4S?

If you're every asked 'Why do you think you've been stopped?" and you think you know....then for goodness sake say why...

If I've seen someone with no seatbelt, who had fastened it by the time I'd stopped them and they answered 'No idea why you've stopped me, officer', then they get a ticket..soooooo fast!

However, if they had said something like; "I didn't have my belt on, I know, I completely forgot and upon seeing your policecar I quickly put it on", the chances are I would have offered some advice and information about the law, safety and so on and sent them on their way with a verbal warning.

Moral to the story:

"Honesty will set you free. Bullshit and Bollocks will cost ya plenty"

Micharea,

That BiB on that occasion was talking bollocks...

We're not all like that and you and the other PH's probably know that anyway..

I mean, if you buy a sandwhich that tastes crap you don't say "I hate all sandwhiches". Do you?

No, but I don't shop there anymore. You on the other hand seem to have a monopoly. Given a choice I would rather be stopped by the WRVS or AA (eventhough I don't drink).

Doing 60 mph on the single carriageway bit of the A40 just west of Oxfod a few years ago, I came up behind a Cavalier or somesuch with a strange looking panel in the back window and 2 people up front. It was doing 55 mph and kept easing over just a bit as if to tempt me to overtake. Something didn't feel right, so I just sat back. A few minutes later, someone behind me lost patience and blasted past - only for the Cavalier to set off after him, flash him and pull him over - the back window panel now saying 'POLICE'.

Rather a sneaky bit of baiting the genpub, in my view... I wonder what the driver had to say to Pinky and Perky on that occasion?
