I would follow firstly to see if the speed increased or decreased, or stayed the same.
It might have been a quick spurt of adrenalin via the right foot...
I would also question the observations of the driver. ie: quiet motorway, I'm the only large saloon car in lane 1 with two interior mirrors, 4 whip aerials and a black oblong box on the parcel shelf.
Perhaps the speeding driver needs to be pulled?

I presume that most people on here will agree with the points in my last post?
Ermmm, you mean this one on the bike forum....
"I love the fact that no matter where I am or what speed I'm doing, I've always got ooodles of the stuff left to get me out of the shit or in front of the first car to the bend".........
I meant the point on this post...
The point I made on the bikers post was intended for the reader to understand that the opinion made of course meant 'within the confines of the relevant speed limit for that section of road!'
Obviously......
Come on...you're not trying to trip me up, are you?

Hmmmm can honestly say ive never had the pleasure of a "blow out", but then i do buy the very most expensive tyres i can and to the highest speed rating, at present rated to over 150mph continuous.
Maybe i could get a special license to speed?![]()
So do I, but I had a hole in the sidewall about 2" across, and a fooked alloy wheel.

Oh, I forgot, tyres never blow out on "quiet motorways"...Also animals never run out onto "quiet motorways"..
My mistake...sorry
Are you saying we should not exceed 70/80 mph on motorways incase of a puncture?
Would this also apply to police cars , hmmm think i know the answer to that one.
Lets halt the progress of mankind for fear of getting a puncture then.
You agree with my points then Deltaf?
When you approach 100mph and beyond that, vehicle take on some sort of animal intincts in the effent of something out of the ordinary. People who've controlled blow outs, skids and severe lane changes at 70mph-90mph, seem to loose all that skill at 100mph and above. However, it's probably the speed and physics and not their 'skill' that decides the outcome.
As for speeds on motorways..The 70mph limit, means that people will push things a bit and drive at 80mph. We're only human afterall. However, if the speed limit was increased to 80mph, humans would 'push it' and travel at 90mph or a little above. Unfortunately, not all drivers and not all vehicles on the road are able to safely travel at that speed regardless of the fact that the vehicle WILL get to that speed.

Cant say i agree with you in not exceeding a speed limit, as theyre set by idiots with no idea of where the REAL limit lies.
I regularly travel at xxx and can readily identify with the "animal instinct" part of the post you made, but at that speed i realise i dont have time to be looking anywhere other than ahead, never mind the speedo!
Remember also that blow outs can occur at much lower speeds and end up with just as much carnage as if travelling at higher speeds, if circumstances permit.
As a matter of interest, how many blow outs of GOOD quality tyres do you come across on your travels?
Im not talking about budget crap or remoulds
, im on about the likes of Bridgestones, Pirellis etc fitted to expensive vehicles.
TIA.

Well me for 1, and i don't buy cheap tyres (Goodyear Eagle)

So by the same logic if the limit was 200mph, people would do 210?

Pwig..I think you're absolutely correct; if the limit was 200mph, people would do 210mph. It's human nature. There are plenty of 30mph zones in this country for no apparent reason. People don't blast through them normally at 70mph, but instead do about 40mph. Enough to be quicker than the limit, but not enough to lose your licence or attract too much attention.
There are a suprising number of mysterious 'blow outs' on motorways and other fast stretches of road.
My guess is that the vehicle's tyres have gone over or struck some sharp object in the carraigeway further down the road and the rapid deflation occurs a little later.
As for police vehicles having blow outs etc..a very real possiblity and one which a couple of colleagues of mine have suffered at high speed. However, police drivers train to a very high standard and achieve that standard before being allowed to drive high-performance vehicles. The same high standards are not required from Joe Public who can pass their test and then purchase a 200+bhp vehicle and drive it down the road and 100 and smiths mph!
I know there'll be a lot of good drivers on this board and I didn't wish to sound patronising when I wrote the last paragraph, but the fact remains that there are also many, many drivers who travel on our roads in high-powered motor vehicle who I wouldn't leave in charge of my TV remote control.
You have to set rules in a civilised modern society and the fact remains that our police service (and other emergency services), must be allowed to break the speed limits when circumstances dictate. However, there is an old rule of thumb in the police which goes like this:
"No emergency or situation warrant you putting yourself or other in danger by the manner or your driving. For if you crash and are unable to attend the scene which you originally set off for, then you are of no use to those victims in need"
One other thing on speeds and people ability to drive at speed. I've just read today, in South Yorkshire there is a stretch of road called the Stocksbridge By-pass. It was up until recently one of the most dangerous stretches of road due to the number of serious and fatal road traffic collisions. However, a few years ago SPECS cameras were installed (you know, the ones that time you between two points and calculate your Average Speed). Figures are now back, that since the advent of these cameras on that 60mph road, there have been a 96% drop in accidents! While figures like that are resulting from the advent of speed cameras, there is no arguement that speed doesn't contribute heavily to accidents. It does and that proves it.
Having said that, there is still really a strong arguement for increasing the numbers of Traffic Police to detect the anti-social drivers, the mobile phone users, the tailgaters, the solid white line jumpers, the road ragers etc etc. Cameras can never do that. However, if they continue to reduce accidents on such roads like the infamous Stocksbridge By-pass, they will continue to be in favour by the government.
Write to your MP's about your wishes to see more Traffic Police..
