What was this copper doing? Speed trap?

Was being driven out to a pub yesterday lunchtime, down fairly wide de-restricted A-road (A606 nr Nottingham if anybody interested).

And I see a marked up Police Astra waiting to turn left from a sideroad... Except when passing I look across and the officer appears to be aiming some device (assume lazer? certainly looked like that kind of device) at traffic coming towards us on the opposite side of the road.

Three things struck me as odd:

1. That he was parked at the junction (anybody wanting to turn left would have to do so from his rhs, *possibly* having to cross the white line of the side road)

2. His view of the oncoming vehicles would be interupted by vehicles travelling as we were.

3. I could not be sure, but he appeared to be aiming/viewing through his CLOSED side window.

On returning a couple of hours later, same car/Officer, was sat in a layby a few miles further down the road, aiming the device *through the windscreen* at oncoming vehicles, but again from the 'wrong' side of the road ie through the stream of traffic heading away from him.

So really curious - what was he up to?

Holding a TV aerial , so he can watch the football on a portable in the car.

Nope he was tryingto get his statelite receiver working (sold to him by Del boy), so was unable to use his gps to find where the nearest donut shop was!
