I was listening to the radio (Magic) on the way into work and i'm sure I heard an advert stating that TRL will get you for a £100 fine if you perform a U-Turn in London.

More cameras I suppose!

Not just Scameras and not just U-Turns see Transport for London Link... if they can identify you from CCTV they will use that to prosecute... either that or if one of their highly trained traffic wardens.... is that an oxymoron?!... sees you they'll issue the ticket.

Big Brother?!!.. just without Davina!!!

Which law is that you are breaking? I seem to recall it being part of the driving test when I were a lad

Free-flowing traffic is essential to keeping London moving. But it can take just one inconsiderate driver ignoring road signs to cause jams and clog up the system.

Point 1 is valid, so why is so little invested to keep traffic flowing? It seems the opposite is generally true.

Point 2 is blaming individuals for the generic problem. Of course it's true that inconsiderate driving can cause problems for others, but to state that "the whole system clogs up" because of just one driver is overstating it somewhat.

Overall, typical claptrap used to justify another stealth tax.

It was that bit that confused me... I thought they meant "in London"

What about a 3-point turn instead then, takes a bit longer than a handbrake assisted U-turn but is still part of the driving test so must be a valid manoeuvre!?

I always thought it was not allowed to do U-Turns in the West End anyway.

As far as I know it does only apply to not obeying traffic signs and your last statement is correct... see the link I posted above!!!

It also applies to entering yellow crossed boxed areas (with usual exception if turning right). The full list of signs that this new bylaw applies to is HERE

The headline £100 for doing a U-turn in London was originally a news headline not TfL's statement!

Yes but their advert on the radio only talks about the U-Turn part.

(It involves a woman making up loads of excuses to her partner about why she got the fine)

Now who's being picky?

Ads are ads and not legal notification of bylaws... if they get you to look at the TfL site or pick up a leaflet (or ask questions on a discussion board) then they've served their purpose. U-turns in places where there are no prohibition signs are not affected by this bylaw AFAIK!
