Can anyone tell me if they think the following is happening more often?

Subject A owns a red Escort. He sees subject B's car in a car park, another red escort, same year, make and model. He notes down subject B's number, gets some plates made up and happily flings his car down the A-roads at whatever speed he fancies. He gets flashed by a camera, and subject B is left trying to explain that the picture of a red Escort with his plate isn't him.

I don't think there would be any way of getting figures on this, but it occurs to me as something that the more scrote-minded individuals out there would try. Anyone know anything more about this?

Don't know if there are figures on cloning, but I do know a new crime has been invented by over reliance on cameras - number plate theft - I remember reading about whole streets being targetted.

Funny you should say that.

Someone stole my escort and then put someone elses escort plates on it.

Then they made the mistake of driving back through mmy area again 2 weeks later and I notice the car buy its rust patch and the scuffs on the wheels! Called the police and after a short chase I got the car back minus all my tapes but plus a tank of fuel and some tools!
I hadnt reported it stolen to the insurance company so it wasnt even recorded!

Bet theres no many people that end up better off when they get back a stolen car!

Nothing you can do to prevent becoming a victim of cloning, but you can make your vehicle uniquely identifiable. I suggest a "Speed Cameras are Fun" sticker in the rear window would make you unique. Of course, it might make you a figure of fun for fellow PHers - Streaky

that's why it is a bit harder to get number plates made up these days...

Yup, will get away with it ----- for so long.

I often preach that there is always a day of reckoning (as Dusty confirms) and if he is driving in such a manner to attract attention then a pull is definately on the cards, plus the all singing, dancin ANPR which can be fed with details of sus vehicles/stolen VRM's.

Get that over fertile brain on more lawful pursuits.
