Lancashire Police got new toys!
Discussion
Here in Lancashire, not only are we lucky enough to have civilian Scamera Van operatives, we also have flash unmarked police cars who hang about at 80mph in the outside lane.
My Sister in Law works @ HQ and the apparent tactic is for them to drive at just over 70mph outside lane, wait for you to push them/flash them over then you zip past and bang, got ya!
All this to save a child getting run over outside a school? hmmmm

My Sister in Law's next door-but-three neighbour once had her windows cleaned by a chap whose uncle used to play crown green bowls with a lady who knew someone from the corner shop who overheard in the chippy two blokes who emptied the bins at HQ that the apparent tactic is for them to drive at just over 70mph outside lane, wait for you to push them/flash them over then you zip past and bang, got ya!
Like you'd ever actually need to do this. There's enough idiots driving badly (tailgating, poor lane discipline etc) as it is. We don't need to create work, there's MORE than enough to go round.

how fast you "nip" past presumably decides if you get a NIP ?
I think in America this is called entrappment, and is illegal.

Isn't it reassuring to know that the crime in Lancashire is so under control, burglaries are almost unheard of apparently and there is no drug problem whatsoever. Therefore all the surplus budget can be spent on whizzo gadgets to harrass, sorry, monitor, peoples driving habits and make the world a safer place.
Absolutely disgraceful.
This is the result of living through an age one could define as 'The Era of Human Rights.'
An era where red tape and preventative jealousy dances unfettered on the grave of freedom and industry.
Officers performing such tactics should hang their heads in shame.

Nah, they should just hang.
Legal disclaimer: the author is in no way suggesting that human rights advocates should nip down to their local B&Q, buy eight feet of nylon double-braided rope (£4.50 in the accessories section), and garotte themselves slowly

No-one's actually said what the gadget is. If it's ANPR, it would be used to tackle crime.

Is it a fact that the tactic described is actually conducted? Or is it "spin", reported third hand?

Seen yesterday M61 near Bamber Bridge two unmarked silver Merc C class with some elctronic wizardry bolted onto the side just behind the offside front wheel Any Ideas on its use??
What does it actually look like? Size, shape, colour?
I saw something similar on IIRC an Omega a couple of weeks back on M25
Cylindrical object (about 5-6inches in length) silver, fitted just in front of O/side wheel arch, had a wire/cable coming from O/side back window/door attached to it
Looked a bit Sus

They've been doing this for a long time in the South. Don't need them, scum of the force. If they weren't police officers they'd be mugging old ladies rather than motorists.

In the cars described in the original thread, the ANPR/video are (I think) both front and back, so can read vehicles behind that pass, or vehicles in front that are passed.
Cheers Dibble
It had me baffled when I saw it
Initially I thought it could have been speed related
been caught on a police in car camera before

How is an unmarked car lurking in the fast lane used for tackling crime?

I know - but probably the type like the one on Traffic Cops with the fake tan and bottle blond hair.
That type - we do not need!
But would say we need the types such as Dibble, TonyRec, will crash, et al!

I presume you mean lane three, or the outside lane.
Criminals use the road ntework the same way that the rest of us do, ie to get from A to B. They are often going from A to commit an offence at B, or having already committed an offence at A, are returning to B.
While the unmarked car may not physically stop the offender there and then, much useful intelligence can be gleaned. There are also a number of core offenders who drive while disqualified, and usually without documents. If it isn't possible to detect another offence, it is possible to remove these people from circulation, at least for a few hours, while enquiries are made into the vehicles they are using. If they continue to drive while disqualified, they will eventually serve a custodail term. There is more than one way to skin a cat.
Traffic departments nowadays (what's left of them)have a much wider remit than previously. We are ferquently used to disrupt drugs delivery sites, and perform high visibility patrol in crime hotspots. Unmarked vehicles are also used to target offenders in a variety of ways, as I've posted elsewehere.
