This little gem appeared on the Cumbria safety forum and in the Sun newspaper!

Mr Mark Mower took the 'ump when he was pulled over for driving .. too slowly!

Mark, process worker at the local nuclear plan, was travelling northwards towards Whitehaven when he turned right into a 20mph zone. A police transit van, travelling from Whitehaven town centre turned left after him.

Mindful of pedestrians, and the fact he was passing an infant school at playtime, and the little fact that his Merc SLK takes exception to humps which wreck its suspension and pristine bodywork , Mark drove very carefully over the humps at ... 5mph!

The police officer in his transit van flashed his lights, and Mark prepared for an overtake. The the blue lights were switched on - so mark stopped!

Mark was astounded to receive a strong ticking off and a police caution for driving too slowly over speed humps

He said "I am absloutely staggered! It seems there is a minumum speed limit in a 20 mph zone - but I am as to what it is!

"With all the furore over speed cameras, excessive speeding and speed kills children, I find it quite ridiculous that I was stopped and cautioned for driving too slowly past an infant school at playtime!

"I always drive over these humps at 5mph because I do not want to damage my car. They are very steep!

Yup! Scafell and Helvellyn - piece of cake by comparison!

Mr Mower has written to the Cumbria's Chief Constable demanding an explanation and would be very grateful if anyone can enlighten him as to what the minumum speed in a 20mph zone over steep spped humps actually is!

A spokesman from Cumbria's finest said: "We can understand the concerns voiced by Mr Mower and we will look into the matter and will contact him when we have spoken to the officer concerned!"

so the cops stopped the guy, gave him a bollocking for going too slowly and then went on their way...........WORTH IT!,surely they saw the car was fairly low (and expensive) so why didnt they just overtake him and leave him to try to keep the underside of his merc in one piece instead of wasting more time than they would have if they had simply sat behind him?

where the hell do the police personnel dept find these retards?.....is there a 'feckwitt register for persons with i.q's lower than a glass of water'?

It is examples of moronic stupidity by bored plods, such as this, that spoil it for the rest of them. Hope he got the shoulder number and makes a full report to the CC. Maybe the doughnut shop was just about to close ???

When I saw the title of this thread I thought, "good, someone done for driving too slowly on a motorway!". When I read it, I couldn't believe it.

OK, so we don't have both sides of the story, nor the detail of what took place. But on the face of it, we have someone who was prosecuted for driving carefully in an area where careful driving is required.

Is there anyone here who can make a case for the actions of the police?

Perhaps the police couldn't get past, and had a further queue of cars behind them, as this guy drove down the middle of the road straddling the middle cushion causing oncoming cars to pull out of the way, etc, etc, etc.

They give him education instead of enforcement, and he complains.

Remibnds me of the "lady" I once encountered on a snow covered road.

Unfortunately the first car on it after the snow fell was driving in my direction. Subsequently all the cars on my side drove in its tracks, and oncoming traffic in one of them, leaving three deep tracks, with high packed snow in between. I was up against parked cars, she was by a space she could pull over into.

But would she pull over?

In the end I had to climb out of my ruts, climb over hers, onto her pavement and behind parked cars to get past her.

And no, I wouldn't have climbed over you to get to her!
