SORN not renewed for 9 years
Discussion
I have a kit car that was taken off the road by me and has been stored since October 2003. I declared the car as SORN on 30/10/2003. The car has remained stored and awaiting recommissioning. This year I intend bringing the car out of mothballs with the intention of either putting it back on the road. Does anyone know what the situation is legally? I seem to remember that when SORN was first introduced it was a one off requirement and that annual re-SORN was not required. When did annual SORN'ing become necessary? What am I likely to suffer if I attempt to tax the car? If it's going to be a horrible feat worse than death the car will go as a track car only.
That's my predicament too, do I try to SORN/Tax it and possibly attract the attention of the customs and excise hoping that their records are not sufficient to realise that the car hasn't been sorned, hence I could get hit with the back tax or fined or both. Or, do I just stick in a roll cage, harnesses and fire extinguisher, fit slicks and do some track days?

where's the thread, any idea?
No idea on the thread but Mrs Hooli appears to have got away with similar. She had a SORN'd bike where the SORN didn't get renewed for a few years, it got taxed again last april & nothing as turned up to do with the unSORNed or taxed period.saaby93 said:
Recent thread where someone taxed their car expecting to get a non-SORN hit but all ok.
BN - your moped was off the road before SORN came in so wouldn't have needed it. It will again now if you don't renew that massive £15 roadtax bill.

If they havent written to you asking for a fine to be paid, you're 'probably' off their radar and 'probably' ok.
I had a T25 Camper Van which I sold last mouth, however It was SORN in 2002 buy the original owner. I bought it last March and got it through the MOT later that April when I came to TAX it the post office did say it came up with outstanding TAX or something like that, but I have never had any comeback ? And as the old owner is a friend of the family he has not had anything either? I did wonder what would happen myself...
Ps I taxed it from march 2011 as I had not declared it SORN.

I bought it in August 2007 and SORN'd it when I bought it.

Thanks for the replies to you all. A mixed bag of opinions and experiencies but has given me some idea of what to expect. I think I'll go on-line and try to sorn it now, see if they cotton on?
why not just tax it at the PO as if you were unsorning it?If you tax on line theres a few day gap where they can issue a fine before it turns up
Tax at PO you get the disc in your mitts straight away
If you check the secure website you might tell DVLA >>>

If you check on the website https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app... it will probably have unlicensed in the vehicle status box, which means that it has been off the road since before the SORN regs came in to play. I have just checked on an old motor cycle I have & that has been changed to licence due to expire, which is really strange as it was last on the road in the 70s! I did make a couple of changes regarding engine & capacity last year so it looks like I might be getting a SORN reminder soon.
Saaby, I bought the bike in 2002, I made the changes in Jan 2010 (I have just dug out my paperwork) I also found a letter from DVLA which says that SORN only applies to vehicles which were taxed on or after 31st January 1998, as I had enquired whether I needed to sorn said vehicle. I was concerned after hearing stories of "off the radar" vehicles loosing their registration numbers.

I don't know about your situation , but I have a couple of cars which have been in storage since before SORN came in .
I'm in some ways reluctant to put either back on the road ( both now need work anyway ) and expose them to this annual nuisance .
SORN is changing so that you don't need to renew it annually. I'm in some ways reluctant to put either back on the road ( both now need work anyway ) and expose them to this annual nuisance .

But surely if you had them before sorn came in you'll have no problems because as I understood it, if the car was off the road before 31st Jan 98 there was no requirement to sorn. I had a tax exempt vehicle that I didn't sorn for a few years & nothing happened when I retaxed it. I also have one that I haven't used or sorn since 2003 & another one from roughly 06 or 07, none of which I ever received a sorn reminder for & both of which I'm hoping to have road worthy this year.
I'm hoping that the worst I'll receive for each individual vehicle is an £80 fine for not declaring sorn, the best I'm hoping for is to tax at the PO & hear nothing.

I've owned one since 1982 and last had it on the road in the mid nineties ; the other I bought about five years ago as a project car but haven't done anything much with it , that one had been off the road for a few years when I bought it but don't know exactly how long - have never been asked to SORN it nor have received any reminders . Both are tax exempt being 1957 and 1963 cars respectively .I had a tax exempt vehicle that I didn't sorn for a few years & nothing happened when I retaxed it. I personally don't think you have anything to worry about especially with the one that has been off road since the mid 90's. I can't be sure of that but I do have a theory that tax exempt vehicles some how seem to slip through the net, also I think that in cases like ours they seem contempt with just getting these vehicles on the system rather than simply fining at the first opportunity. This is just my personal opinion though & I have nothing to back this up with. The one of mine I haven't used since 06/07 is not tax exempt & I'm interested in seeing if I get a different outcome when retaxing that than I do with the tax exempt one.

there are a few probablies around thisone is that they dont actually know how many vehicles are left lying about pre-computerisation until you try to tax them
another is there was a computer crash sometime pre ~ 2001 where they lost a good number of records anyway, so until you try to tax it, they dont know about it
Add in the current malarchy about updating everyones V5 due to a truck load of fresh ones stolen a couple of years ago.
