Most peculiar... I followed a panda car yesterday through my home town. I was driving at my normal speed and I was keeping up with him (Not tailgaiting you understand, but maintaining a steady gap ;. I think I read somewhere that non class one drivers are now limited to 10 MPH above the speed limit even in an emergency. Is this true?

If so, hop in boys, I'll get you there quicker

How silly is this, driving miss Daisy or what

In our force "standard" (ie not advanced trained) drivers are limited to 20mph over any posted limits on emergency runs.

Advanced are also limited to 20mph over on emergency/response, but can go over if you can justify it.

Pursuits are a different ball game altogether...

thread hijack, see profile pics...

Nah...panda drivers can exceed speed limit by whatever is needed, but still required to be 'safe'.

Cant engage in pursuits of vehicles, but blue and twos to emergency jobs, through red ATS etc, perfectly ok.

There is not a nationwide policy in relation to standard, or response drivers as they used to be called. Each force differs. Response, or standard drivers are at the second stage of police driving, and have completed a 4 week driving course who respond to district emergencies, and are very good at piloting a mondeo sized car around the streets. (Well, should be, most are) responding quickly to emergencies.
The probationers are what is called A to B drivers, who cannot use emergency equipment, pursue or anything else for that matter, and use a car to get to routine jobs.
This was to ease the fact that probationers used to have to wait until their 4 week course came up to drive, which meant that a qualified driver had to take them out. This is a drain on manpower (non pc comment there) as most of the time to cover the district you have to have as many single crewed cars out during a shift, as there are not enough Pc's to go around.
Also, very soul destroying for the probationer who (hopefully) wants to get out there and prove him/herself. You can't do that when you are constantly crewed with another more experienced officer.
Bear it in mind though, that a class1 driver could still be driving a 'panda' car for any amount of reasons, they could have returned to district out of choice, be temporarily posted there etc etc.
In that situation, the driver is qualified to pursue, tpac in the same way that he/she would be if in an omega or something similar.
It isn't the size of the car that is impressive, it's the standard of driver....

This was just strange. They had the blue's and two's on, but were travelling at barely 10MPH over the limit. I would have expected quicker driving, and have generally witnessed it over the years.

I thought it was a PC chase, and I don't mean Police Constable. Was horrified to think the lentilists had finally managed to set emergency response speed!!!

I must admit I have a habit of leaving the blues on after a stop/road block/butty run and driving around aimlessly at 20 m.p.h. marvelling at the politeness of other drivers who are all stopping to let me out of junctions etc...

Eventually someone points to my roof and gives me a w*nker sign and I turn them off...

Bliarout,
The Panda driver has probably read too much about people whinging about police accidents and so on and so forth and thought...

'ok..joe public...have it your way....I'll travel to your burglary in process or your car being stolen incident, but due to your whining last week about police double standards and polacs, I'll not drive too fast'

Cant have it both ways...

They probably forgot, sounds stupid, but without the sirens going, it does happen. Well, I've done it.

Accordingly to the hundreds and hundreds of 'innocent' motorists prosecuted each year, that's safe...

The 20mph above the posted limit is a maximum allowance for standard drivers.

Agreed. So if I take an advanced test can I go faster?

And actually, that's not what I was getting at.

It's the blanket number that someone has made up that annoys be.

Besides, who enforces this rule?

Police discipline and Complaints department...

In my force all cars, Traffic, beat, whatever are fitted with 'black boxes', recording what speed, what lights, what sirens etc are activated in the event of an 'incident' ie: polacc.

If the beat car was doing something that contravened 'policy' they would be prosecuted. However, in my force, Panda drivers don't have this 20mph limit, and would only have to justify their actions later in the event of an accident.
