As I was heading north on the A19 just south of Sunderland about 18:00 this evening, there was a convoy of busses (southbound) lead by police bikes, then more about half way through the convoy and then following the last of the busses.

About 30ish in all double deckers and coaches. The police had also been holding traffic from joining the A19 a few miles ahead of the run of vehicles.

As I'm a nosey bugger, anyone know what was going on?

Sunderland heading south to Middlesborough, FA Cup replay.
That makes some sort of sense.

Cheers.

If that level of escort is necessary, would you really want to go to a football match?

Looked far more sinister when I was heading south on the A19 about 5pm.

Over the brow came a convoy of blue flashers - about 10 bikes, 10 cars - heading North. Escorting nothing, but off to pick up the escort.

Are they allowed that?
Yes. The escort is required to be at a certain place at a certain time, as a group.
