Clarkson has just had another pop at scameras. The very things we've been saying on here about how they won't catch the teenager high on drugs in unlicenced, un-taxed, un-MOTed cars. Oh, and he threw in how scameras won't catch Osama Bin-Laden ... provided he drives at 29mph!

A classic example of what a load of tosh these "safety" cameras really are. Speed is not the problem, bad driving is. What is being done about that? SFA !!!
The whole situation has become ridiculous, criminalising literally millions of people, causing resentment, financial hardship and achieving almost nothing in terms of improved accident figures despite the frequently regurgitated bullshit from Brainstorm and his cronies.
JC did a very good job there.
bring on more trafpols.

Is anybody pettitioning for more Trafpol out there??

I suspect not...but they should...

Letters to MP's, pettition forms with 1000s and 1000s of signatures.....

It needs doing, because the chiefs of police and the government, think that the public don't want TrafPol.
Too many occasions when people sat in traffic cars have said to the BiB, "Have you got nothing better to do...you should be out there catching muggers"..
So the powers that be, in 2001, said "Ok, Mr Motorists, we'll half and in some cases scrap traffic departments. The officer will do as suggested and work on street crime squads and community safety teams and Gatso numbers will increase to 'police' the roads.."

Well done, Mr Motorist, you played a blinder there for all of us!....

It would be something of a slap in the face for the critics of PHers if PH presented a petition for more TrafPol. What about it? - Streaky

I think...no, i believe that it would be extremely responsible to take this action and it would highlight that just about all of us on the Forum want/believe in 'Safer Roads.

MORE trafpols (and sorry!) NO scameras......
what was it about accidents that the twocers, druggies, DUIers, uninsured, unMOTed and other such crims cause over 50% of accidents now???? and we've no recourse as the courts give them 30 minutes "detention" at the back of the court, naughty boy smack smack!

I agree with whats been said so far, but whats to stop the powers that be deciding that traffic cops should blitz speeding motorists?

BiB - if your superiors ordered you to start ticketing everyone exceeding the speed limit, would you really be able to still use discresion and just target bad driving? I suspect not....

The real problem, regardless of whether its cameras or BiB giving out the tickets is that the people in authority believe that if no-one speeds, KSI will disappear... which we all know to be BS.

Trafpols have been targetting Motorists since their introduction so nothing would change in that respect.

If i was to report everyone that i saw speeding then i wouldnt need a Bike or a Car...i could just stand outside of our Trafic Unit and write tickets all day long. The same can be said about a few Offences in fact.

The powers that be know that people speed..in fact, they speed themselves, everyone speeds to some degree or another. Sadly, its all about revenue from the Gatsos etc and hopefully more 'Policeman' (whatever their skills) to deal with Robbers and Burglars to make the Government look good.

Sadly, thats it in a nutshell.

You know it, we know it.

What I want to know is how all this can be done in the name of road safety?

Its moving peoples eye off the issue and is ultimately counter productive.

How can this absolute barmy madness be allowed to continue?

I have to say I do see this as a somewhat recurring theme within the Labour governance...

Well I did get this letter published in the Somerset County Gazette:

Cameras in a spin

In 2003, with over 5000 speed traps across UK, far from the fatalities reducing as the official spin would have the public believe, deaths rose by 2.2% to the highest level since 1998; 3508.

In Avon and Somerset for 2003 KSI (Killed and seriously injured) rose by 11.4% overall at the sites introduced by the Safety Camera Partnership and there were some large increases:

Some areas in England with the highest number of cameras saw the biggest increases in deaths.

What’s needed is not more cameras but more marked police cars with professionals who can remove the truly dangerous drivers from our roads, better education and road engineering.

And Jezza threw in a comment at the end that I have reminded folks of many a time.

Namely that Peter Sutcliffe got nabbed because of a traffic unit from South Yorks finest making a stop due to spotting something a bit iffy.

We have some very expensive white elephants in this country. The public services in particular are very wasteful. While I would abolish speed cameras overnight and make it a criminal offense to continue to develop mass surveilance equipment of any kind for commercial reasons, I do not support an increase in traffic police. In fact I would replace the highway patrol with just that, a highway patrol put there to help citizens in distress on the public road. Traffic police have not and do not make any difference to RTA statistics, if they did we would have seen massive increases in the last few years as police numbers have dwindled. After an accident there is certainly a need to clear up the mess, sort out the paperwork and move on. Traffic police do this very badly because they close road at huge cost to industry to get a piffling prosecution, IMO, a total waste, we cannot afford it and it should stop immediately.

It is really quite ludicrous to have an expensive trained policeman even involved in RTAs. This is in no way meant as a pop at anyone here because you clearly care very much about what you do. My experience of traffic police is very mixed as you would expect, however I have met enough arrogant swaggering idiots (including one creating great hindrance to the ambulance and fire services at an RTA to the point where the local residents took him on oneside) to recognise that the system is so far from perfect it is time a total rehash was considered.
