Car is taxed but lost tax disc - OK to drive?

Technically no, as its an offence to not display the disc. Enforcement is more electronic than practical now though, so as long as you dont park on double yellow lines youll be alright. Some local authority car parks issue tickets if youre untaxed too, but if your car was taxed, which it was, then youll be able to deal with that retrospectively.

I agree.The car is taxed. But being caught 'failing to display' is the risk you run. It's up to you. I'd take the odds for the few days it will take for the replacement to arrive.
But that's just me.
Had this happen to me a while ago - disc was stolen from my car (convertible, left with roof down) so I reported it as such to local police stn.
I drove knowing that 'failure to display' would have applied, but I felt OK as 1) tax had been paid and 2) I had reported theft

As long as you've applied for a replacement, I'd imagine it'd come under the same rules as driving while waiting for them to send you it in the first place - technically illegal but producing a valid tax disk at the police station within a couple of weeks is a valid mitigation. Not sure though.

That is referred to as "good luck".Don't assume that everybody would be as lucky as you.
If you lose a tax disc, get a replacement ASAP. It has happened to me and, yes, I was pulled up. Luckilly I had the paperwork to show a replacement disc had been applied for and the policeman let me off. If I hadn't been able to show him the copy of the application form he may not have been so lenient.

Depends what you do for a living. If you work anywhere near a particle accelerator it could open an Einstein Rosen bridge and the car could be pulled back to a time where the previous tax disc applies. ktards.It is a seperate offence to the ownership of tax not to display it, so there's no technically about it really. Not displaying a tax disc is an offence for which you can be prosecuted.
I'd like to think that most cops would let it fly once or twice if the car checks out as actually having tax, but that would be entirely discretionary and it would be lawful to prosecute you should they be so inclined.

Many years ago my old boss lost the one off his car, his young daughter had eaten it. How does one lose a tax disc?
That's what a lot of people think of the DVLA anyway.

!I drove around without a tax disc for about a week - I'd taken it off and put it in my wallet when I'd part exchanged the car and forgot to put it back on when I got it back after returning my faulty new purchase
Only realised when the salesman at the dealer I bought the next car from pointed it out when valuing it!
