An article in The Times last week said that "Britain allegedly invents roughly 10 new crimes a year".

Of course, this is total tosh!

For example, the Animal By-Products Regulations 2003, implementing EC Regulation 1774/2002, alone put more than 500 new criminal offences on the statute book, each punishable by a fine up to £20,000 or up to two years in prison; and this is not atypical.

Now, how do the BiB keep up?

We have a training day at the 'big house' every 6 months in which we catch up with Traffic Law, procedures and new kit etc.
However, if theres a major change in' everyday' policing law then we all get trained (normally a day)over the course of a few months .....operational demands permitting.

In addition, new legislation is passed to us via internal Intranet. So when we're at work and log on for emails or to do paperwork etc, there is an 'legislation update' page on my computer.

Well, that happens in my force anyway..

We get a training day every 5 weeks where we get a training day where we receive input from the "Police Partnership Trust" and our BCU on "Problem Solving Policing" - all the useful stuff.

When new legislation is released (new sexual offences act for example) we get an entry on our computer log-in screen telling us to learn it ourselves.

What! Learn sexual offences? How does that work, then? A certain TV company might be interested in making a programme about that - Streaky
