Yesterday (11/7) I was given a parking ticket by the lovely wardens of Greenwich. The contravention stated was 'parked in restricted street during pescribed hours'

In the street there were parking bays which I knew I shouldn't park in as they were for permit holders, but I was on a single yellow line.

The highway code states that the signs should be on upright signs parallel to the road. (Rule 213) The only sign I could see was right in front of the parking bays on a wall.

Any advice will be much appreciated.

Thanks

The single yellow you was on, was it terminated at either end correctly?

I remeber more than one case where a chap had a parking ticket and took photos of the (in this case double yellows) ends which where not terminted so he took a high way code book and said this line is meaningless anyone could have painted it.

Funny thing is almost every yello/double yellow I look at nowadays isnt terminated correctly probably because the chaps painting them couldnt give a F*** about it

Does this count on neglected broken up yellow lines as well ?
If the yellow lines are not finished at the ends you can stick 2 fingers up at them

I dont know any judgment on lines that have just broken up or wear, but in regards to a line clearly not terminated it has been argued sucessfully more than once in court. The relevant councils soon get the line corrected, fortunatly not in my neck of the woods yet, but ive never been caught out yet.

Even a smattering of leaves makes a line unenforceable... Remember, they are on commission these days boys!

But there is law and there are regulations (the HC points to them where they exist). As we motorists are supposed to obey the law and comply with the regulations, so must those tasked with implementing them and enforcing compliance.

If the council has not complied with the law and regulations (display of signs, painting and termination of lines, etc.) they cannot and should not succeed.

As advised, take photographs (digital might do, but analogue prints/transparancies are better) of the signs and their location relative to the situation, of the lines and their (lack of) terminations, and of the general scene. Then reply to the council, enclosing COPIES of the photographs, and stating that as they have not complied with the regulations governing the display of signage, their fine is unlawful. They'll probably drop it. You might want to send copies to your local paper (especially if the council drop the fine), in case others have been improperly (assuming this is the case) fined.

If they're in the wrong, don't let them get away with it!
