Letter from DVLA, Advice....
Discussion
A few months back I got a letter from the DVLA telling me I owed them £40, for not taxing my old, and long ago sold Orion.
When I sold the car for Spares in January, I filled out the V5 with the details of the new keeper, handed the SORN Document to the new keeper, and posted the V5 off to the DVLA. Simple.
When the letter arrived I phoned them up and explained the situation, that the car is probably now in a cube somewhere, and the V5 with whoever cubed it, I hope. The woman on the phone said ok, put it in writing, send it in with the letter i got. Did that, simple short letter.
Anyway, This afternoon I get home to another letter from them saying that I now owe them £80 for not having taxed vehicle L566 PSR, the same car that is probably lying cubed somewhere.
How do I go about sorting this one, they haven't listened to my first letter, they have obviously lost/didn't get the V5 when I sent it to them (why doesn't that surprise me) and now they want money! Court Action is mentioned but I am taking that as a scare tactic for now.
TIA

Suggest you write to them again enclosing a copy of your first letter. Be polite but firmer this time, mention that you will feel forced to copy any further correspondance will be to your MP Mr./Ms. XY of the constituency for Z.
A further option would be to think like a bank and threaten to send them an invoice for the time it took out of your day to respond.

Cheers. Only problem, I didn't keep a copy of the first letter
I had no need to, I was told to put what I said on the phone in writing and that would be the end of it.
I will definately send them a very strongly worded letter, and of course the bill for my time, £80 should cover it i think.

That's "OK advice", unless DVLA do have a copy of the original letter (remember, the computer is just churning these things out) and your "copy" and theirs are not "copies" (if you get my drift). It doesn't help your credibility in their eyes. Better (IMHO) to say that you, "Wrote on DD/MM/YYY, in the following terms ..." - Streaky
Absolutely. Don't attach the "original letter" if you don't have it. In your new letter just say "as I stated in my letter to you dated DD/MM/YYYY, ..."
You've therefore made reference to the fact that this is your second letter to them (thus achieving the desired effect) without looking like a twit for sending a 'copy' of a letter that will not match theirs if they do find it.
