Just wondering...how many of you have knowledge of neighbours or colleagues who are driving whilst uninsured or untaxed?
The reason that I ask this, is a couple of days ago I stopped a driver who was negotiating a roundabout whilst holding mobile phone to ear. After pointing out the obvious dangers to him, I wrote him out a fixed penalty ticket to relieve him of £30. After recieving the ticket, he began to get out of my car muttering about 'not doing anything about so and so'. Now not wishing to be rude and also not liking such an idiot to have the last word, I enquired what he had said.
It went along the lines of "Where I work there are loads of 'foreigners' without tax or insurance. Why aren't you doing anything about them"...
(The don't do me do the others comments are rife in these situations)
I asked chummy how long he'd known these facts about his colleagues and whether he'd reported it before. He answered that he'd known about it for months and hadn't informed the police before now. My reply was that it obviously didn't bother him before it had cost him £30, or else he would have reported it before. Get into your car and go away..

Incidentally, I later parked outside said company and pulled the first employee leaving. He had all his documents with him, but his tax had expired...(better than nothing, in my book)

Must admit to not being very observant on this matter. Must try and make an effort in future - apparently one in ten drivers in Essex are supposed to be uninsured/untaxed.
I have shopped someone for working while claiming disability benefit before and wouldn't hesitate if I saw an untaxed vehicle.

I know people who are driving with no licence / insurance / tax / mot. But surely as long as they drive at the speed limit they are not a danger to anyone...
And if they do get caught whats going to happen, a ban? Its not as if that will stop them driving anyway...
I mean, you wouldnt want to do some proper police work would you, isnt it easier to sit behind your scamera gun and pull the average joe who does have all the above documentation.
Me bitter... NAH!

It slipped away while I was distracted,
I swear I havent changed, how did this happen?......
And if they do get caught whats going to happen, a ban? Its not as if that will stop them driving anyway...

And how long had his tax expired? A day, two days.. if so again you are making criminals out of innocent people just because something had slipped his mind..
And while you were sitting outsdie that office waiting on people to come out couldnt you have been out catrchind dangerous drivers. Heavens knows theres plenty of those about.
If it was out of date by months then by all means see to it that he pays his tax.

I believe there is a grace period of 15 days after the expiration date, after this your pants are down!
I aint got no problem everyone not paying the tax (it's not like we see any benefit), I would prefer it if people did pay their insurance, but there is no excuse for not having a valid MOT. The average person simply cannot do a proper all over examination of their car, I would like to know that cars on the road will not fall apart.

I know people who have driven whilst banned and probably therefore no insurance etc. Can't condone it but I will ignore it as they were both banned for minor 'speeding' offences (all scameras) that mounted up to 12 points. Both have families, houses and jobs - no licence and therefore no job so could have been in serious financial problem. (Think of the children works both ways . . . !)
I think the govt would rather they drive whilst banned as at least that way they're still getting income tax/ni that these chaps paid. It's all about money at the end of the day . . . sadly.

Well, pardon me for speaking, but I have a huge problem with banned drivers still driving. They aren't insured, for a start, and if they happen to rear end you, guess what, no cover! You'll either have to sue him, or claim off your own insurance. Kiss no claims goodbye. If the scrote injures you, and you have to take time off work, or even worse, never work again, I think attitudes to said unlicenced drivers might change.

Good point Jock. However, I beleive that the insurance will pay out through a global iniative that isnurance companies pay into - can't remember the name of the fund.
Those that choose to drive with a ban from the court face a custodial sentence if memory serves me right; and if they are stupid enough to get done in the first instance, they will get picked up soon enough.
The really sad thing about it is most that have no insurance do so becuase they cannot afford insurance so they do so (in their own eyes) because there is no feesable way of driving legaly. It is a lesson that the government should learn quickly as the 'illegal way' also bypasses the whole system - including vehicle registartion.

I tend to be in favour of St's tactics here. Often the first step to an uninsured, unroadworthy vehicle or banned driver. The BiB do have the discretion to give a verbal reminder if the tax is a bit late and everything else is ok I would think.
So if the uninsured etc. prang you are they going to sit and exchange details? Are they

Oh yes, as pointed out, read the top of the forum. I think any personal grievances are much better aired, well, personally, not on here. Play nicely people.

Driving without Insurance has a negative effect on driving. A driver that has no insurance is more likely to be involved in a fail to stop accident.
A driver that uses an unregistered vehicle is much more likely to break all road traffic laws, speed, bus lanes, box junctions etc as they have no reprisal to fear.
This makes them a more dangerous driver to you and me.
I stop people for one of two reasons. (1) The manor of their driving (2) The condition of their vehicle.
Out of the people I stop (including mobile phones and speeding) I’d say an average of 80% have no insurance or MOT.
If I see a car without a tax disc it’s always worth a stop however there are so many ways to display a ‘valid’ tax disc I never reply on it.
A driver who drives whilst disqualified is one of the most dangerous drivers on the road. They fear being stopped by Police and so will do anything to get away, including driving on pavements, wrong way etc.
