thinking about applying to become a special constable as,ive been a refrigeration/air conditioning engineer for the last 16 yrs, and am getting a little bored with it. i would just like to gain an insight into the day to day life of a bobby before i commit. ive got a good mate who's cardiff cid and he loves (and i mean loves!) his job any advice/experience/suggestions welcomed

thanks in advance stiffee :-)

I did 5 years as a Special before I joined the regulars. It was a useful insight, but not really the same as doing it for a full time job.

I did 6 months as a Special with Northumbria Police before i came down to the smoke.

Without a doubt, it helped me to get in and as a result i can thoroughly recommend it.

By the way...im still special.

Actually Tony, you are, as are all the BiB who give their views on this forum, we all get a tremendous benefit from it, but you guys gain very little (except our respect).

I also have an inkling to do it. The only issue with me is very slight eyesight and hearing probs (one ear only, only need specs to drive) Does this still make the specials a no no for me as it would the regular police ? I have also heard the disability non discrimination act may be applying to the Police very soon. Is this true ?

Fitness not a problem, I can do a marathon in under 3 hours 30, and like shifting a few weights.

Just a note on this subject. Dorset currently require applications from people wishing to become Specials.

Really fit looking 20-25 year old girls are particularly under represented...
