An anarchic thought for today

Just driven back into London along M4 and past Fatty 2 Jags monument to stupidity, the bus lane.

Now this is divided from the mere mortals lanes by a solid white line all the way from start to finish.

Accordingly, shouldn't the drivers of all taxis and buses that join the M4 after the start of the bus lane at junction 3 or Heston services and go blasting across the inside and middle lanes to get into the bus lane be prosecuted for crossing a solid white line. Lots of potential revenue there.

I think we should be told!

HC only refers to double lines:

108 Double white lines where the line nearest you is solid. This means you MUST NOT cross or straddle it unless it is safe and you need to enter adjoining premises or a side road. You may cross the line if necessary to pass a stationary vehicle, or overtake a pedal cycle, horse or road maintenance vehicle, if they are travelling at 10mph or less.

There is no reference (in the online HC) to any prohibition effected by a single unbroken white line along the carriageway. Diagram at the bottom of "Road markings" refers to "Rule 217", but this rule does not illuminate the topic.
