Scam Van Laser Targeting & Motorcycles......

As some of you may be aware, I am motorcycle rider (also have a car) who has recently been very close to being scammed on two occaisons by a Scam van. A friend of mine riding a bike,got a NIP which included two photo's:-the first one showed him 1/2 mile away doing 75 in a 50, and the second one showed his rear number plate. He has looked at the two photo's and couldn't even recognise himself in the first one except for a really bright coloured lid. The scam van was parked at traffic lights 1/2 mile further down the road. He reckons they must have saw him stationary at the lights and realising it was him, somehow turned the camera around by over 90 degrees and snapped his rear plate. Can they do this? All his work colleagues said contest it but he paid up anyway ( dont want court, extra fine if lost etc ). My understanding was that when they squeeze the trigger to operate the laser to ascertain the speed, the camera was activated. This is done a second time for comparison of speed. In my mates case this was not done.
Strikes me if they can do this, then they can laser target one vehicle and fine another providing the cars look similar, and the owner cannot prove from the photos that it is definately not him/her.

Your mate was caught by a Laser LTI Speed scope fitted to a video camera and video recorder.
The camera/recorder is on ALL the time, from the moment the operator turns the Laser on to the moment it is powered down and turned off.
Everytime the Laser trigger is pressed and a threshold speed obtained it is marked on the video for future identification.
In the cases of M/C`s the bike is usually targeted coming towards the van, a speed captured and then either the camera turned around (not easy) OR the operator notes down the bikes index plate as it passes by (not easy either)
Only on special operations (hardly ever)is the Laser camera set up to catch m/cs...in fact thinking about it the Met have now stopped ALL Laser talivan operations unitl the delivery of new kit from down under.

Thanks for this, it is very useful. So basically, if a Talivan's dark windows and orange stripes are facing me (I assume they dont operate through the front window)and I am speeding, if they are determined they can "do" me?
Talivans don`t work out of the front window, its not feasable with all the kit, which usually has to be mounted onto a pole in the rear of the van.
However, there is a tripod setup, which can be placed OUTSIDE the van, however it is extremely difficult to spin it quickly to catch M/C`s (I should know I`ve tried)
I have no idea what the new kit is, but apparently its a Laser which works with a DVD CD and burns the image of the speeding motorist onto the Cd, therefore getting rid of the use of `wet` film. Apparently this is the system the Met should have gone for in the first place

Don't see how that works.
Wasn't there a case where a car was photographed breaking the limit, but the photograph was not clear and even though the police officer confirmed that the number was correct, the photo with the recorded speed was deemed unacceptable as evidence as the 'first-generation' photograph did not by itself identify the vehicle.
That was some time ago, but has the law changed.
Advice: plead not guilty, demand all the prosecution evidence 7 days prior to the court case and see what happens. Sounds a bit flawed to me.

I stopped a bike with a flip plate recently...We confiscated the bike until the court case was finalised. (CPS didn't run it, so the bike went back). As the plate was in the down (normal) position at the time of stopping him.
