New system to do points!
Discussion
I was thinking about this on the way to work. Basically high mileage drivers get more of a chance to lose their licence than low mileage drivers.
So how about we allow people who have their cars insured for upto 10,000 miles per year to get 12 points and those that do 20,000 miles per year to get 24 points etc etc. (If people have two cars it would be both policies combined)
That way, per mile everyone is at the same risk of losing their licencse over the three year period.
Good idea or not? I don't think it would be too difficult to police but then again people might start insuring their cars for 20,000 miles instead of 10,000 in order to get the extra lee way.

In our family we work on the basis that 5 of us have a total of 45 points before one of us gets banned. So far my daughter has 3 points which expire in November and the rest of us have none.
If you are worried about getting done for attempting to pervert the course of justice, start off by saying that you don't know who was driving then provide a couple of names. The scammers will demand you tell them or face a prosecution and you reply that you are naming so-and-so as they are the most likely to have been driving. Before you do this demand the photos and any other information that can help identify the driver. It may just go away, but at any rate they'd never make 'perversion of.....' stick as you have expressed your doubt initially, and only 'fessed-up' under duress.
With all that, plus a Road Angel, plus a jammer, it's very unlikely any of my family are at risk of a disqual.

Well half your dream is coming true pmanson...if the white papers going through parliament at the moment make it to law we all gat a Brucie bonus of 20 points before ban...
The down side is that offences will carry more points and as the idea is to get rid of the idea that we have 4 graces (if 3 pointers) we'll no doubt be losing our licenses quicker under the new scheme...and existing points will be scaled up to boot so don't think that you will be getting an extra 8 point buffer.

At the moment some drivers believe that they have a certain number of ‘graces’ before they will be disqualified. We want to discourage this view. One way of achieving this is to re-value the penalty points system. This would give the courts greater scope and flexibility in determining the number of points awarded according to the seriousness of the offence as there would be a larger number of points available to them for individual offences. Under this new system, 20 points (in place of 12 as now) would result in totting up disqualification. New drivers’ licences should be subject to revocation at 10 points, instead of six as at present. It is important to note that this proposal does not mean that an offender (whether a new driver or otherwise) would be able to commit more offences before being disqualified than under the existing system. The other purpose of this change is to facilitate the new fixed penalty regime for speeding offences, described at paragraph 9.5.5 below. Existing points will be scaled up to ensure that those who already have points on their licences do not receive extra ‘graces’.
Plan is a two-tier approach 1st tier the just overs and 2nd tier the higher speeds.
Tier 1 - 5 points
Tier 2 - 12 points
Possibly later increased to 7 and 15 respectively
This was a Northern Irish document but don't see how if it came into effect there it wouldn't here unless they can set their own RTA laws??? Even so would likely get adopted here.
5 and 12 points seems to work out the same as 3 and 6 by my math but 7 and 15 is a different story

Good idea, shall we apply it to other crimes too?
I'm a burglar, so naturally I will get caught more often for breaking and entering than a non-burglar, so you should make allowance for me, and let me off every now and then...
The competent and careful actions of a majority of responsible people should obviously be considered legal
Clearly the law regarding exceeding the speed limit is being misapplied.
