Sorn and occasional use

I have a car that i only really use for the odd trackday, question is can i sorn it, not surrender the tax disc and then drive it to the track on a one day insurance policy, if so whats involved with unsorning it so to speak ?

You can't. You'd have to tax it again and that would cost you a month's tax even if you cashed it in again. VEL is a bit of a scam.

The answer is in my question, only use the car maybe 5/6 times a year, so taxing and insuring it each time would be a bummer.

Unsurprisingly, re taxing it.

Which will cost you at least a month, and you'll have to faff around with refunds each time.

I have a car that gets used only a few times a year. The only option I've found is to insure it on a very limited mileage policy and sorn it for the winter and tax it for 6 months over the summer.

Mainly becuase the insurance scammers want anywhere from £50 upwards to do anything to my policy, including swapping a car over. Plus no one seems to do short term insurance at a sensible price. Throw in the fact its modified and no one wants to know!

You can have a car insured that not's taxed, but not the other way round.

The whole point of continuous insurance thing was that even if it is off road and taxed it needs to be insured. The powers that be don't know it is off the road unless it is sorned, and then you don't need insurance.

If you don't insure it and someone nicks it, then you would have wished you insured it, wouldn't you?

If it is old enough, 10 years, get it on a classic policy with very little mileage and then insurance would be cheap. My 944 is £100 a year and so is not worth the hassel of taxing/sorning/taxing/sorning etc.

Have you checked what the insurance would be like if you insured it annually but very restricted mileage. Might not be much difference to the £300-odd you're paying if you day-insure it. (Assuming it costs £50 a pop to insure it).

They were wrong, its fine to insure a car when its SORN. I SORN my elise most winters, but its always insured as it could still be stolen.

The Royal Sun Alliance told someone I know that you can't insure a sorned car. I told him they were talking rot but he wouldn't have it. So I phoned the RSA and got the same story. They say it's illegal to insure a car on sorn because then it will appear on the MID but be off the road.

SO WHAT!!! I knew they were wrong but they wouldn't have it. Unbelievable, the level of training some of these so called experts have.
