"Who should we say was speeding?
Discussion
You might be aware of the following story;
Couple lied over speeding charge
A couple who lied about who was driving when the husband was clocked by a speed camera were told by a judge that they had come very close to being jailed.
Michael Dwyer risked losing his licence and hence his job when he was measured doing 41mph in a 30mph area in Danbury, Essex.
He already had ten penalty points on his licence, so his wife claimed she had been driving.
The couple confessed after police in Luton launched an investigation.
Mr Dwyer, 40 and his wife, Maxine, 38 of Marsh Road, Luton pleaded guilty to doing acts tending to pervert the course of justice.
Driver feared losing his job
Michael Kirk, defending, told Luton Crown Court the couple were "contrite and distraught" and terrified of going to prison.
But when the speed camera fine came through the mail, they feared Mr. Dwyer would lose his job and be unable to support the family.
Ironically, had he owned up and pleaded exceptional hardship he would probably have escaped a driving ban under the totting up procedures, Mr Kirk added.
When his licence was being routinely checked by his employer, Electrolux, suspicion was aroused because it had a record of the inquiry regarding the speed camera in Danbury, said prosecutor Ibraham Khan.
John Bevan QC told them: "In cases like this a sentence of imprisonment is almost inevitable, however I have taken the view, just, that it is not in this case".
He said the couple had already undergone "stress, humiliation and shame".
On Tuesday, Mr Dwyer was sentenced to do 200 hours community punishment and pay £1,000 costs. Mrs Dwyer was ordered to do 60 hours community punishment.

I'm split with my thoughts...
Firstly I think anyone who lies to the courts, for whatever reason should be punished...(I know that's very black and white, but it's my opinion)..
Secondly though, there are courts who have dealt with people convicted for assaults less severely..

And that should include senior police officers.

Aye, I was sorry to see Elmore get his. He appeared to be a good, effective old style coppers copper.
Did you see the TV programme about the Liverpool police. He featured quite a lot and was heard to say that he was looking forward to retiring, "and sitting on my exceedingly fat arse and doing nothing"

Hi tafia..
Yep mate, I watchted the program and he did seem an ok guy to me..
It gets a problem when you get close to criminals. I'm 'pally' with some regular criminals and I know some the hassles it involves. So add a few more ranks to me and a bit more Mr Big to them and I can see what kind of hornet's nest you could get involved in..

This just goes to demonstrate the totally unreasonable pressure that this bonkers modern speeding enforcement is causing. It's even causing new sorts of lawlessness.
The competent and careful actions of a majority of responsible people should obviously be considered legal

Ach! But we are dealing with one of those creatures who drive cars and who are normally law abiding. It is not politically correct to drive a car and want independence.
This is what Coooperman and self were on about in the taxed/untaxed thread - where this "crime" of speeding and getting copped by robo cop for relatively minor overspeeds for short distances is creating a new brand of "criminal" - one who is brought to this state in total desperation because of fear of losing livelihood.
As for bent cops - I am sure you know of more cases than reach the newspapers - but Manchester did report one case of the "Sicky Fraud" - where two trafpols were claiming sick leave and giving driving lessons when they should have been working. I gather they got couple of months - and no doubt resume their driving school when they leave jails after serving token time inside. There was no mention of their repaying the sick leave they fraudulently claimed in the paper though!
Possibly one-offs?
But there will be some that never make it to local and national press thus depriving us of even more good ol' Bib bashing ammo!

I think the Bib are well down the lists of organisations and industries were people are pulling the wool over the eyes of others...

Some of you lot would have a shock if you worked in private sector
Relatives in Force have passed remarks about some BiB's need for "stress" days.
If you are digging at me being off work this week - still officially on hol leave - and in my "delicate" condition - am allowed some time off within reason for scans etc anyway, und because of what happened in the past - health is having to be being monitored very closely! - But am in work and seniority situation where I can - if I want - write up my analyses and reports at home and be in constant contact with research lab at base at same time. Do not use this perk unless I have to!
11mph over a limit that may be right or wrong but nevertheless, the law: leads to..............
speeding fine, and points. Have points and fear lose of job and income: leads to..................
