Folks

If one takes out an insurance policy for, say 5000 miles on a car but has 2 drivers (i.e. policy holder plus named driver)on the policy, then is it the car that is onsured for the 5k miles or the policy holder? If the latter how does one prove who drove which miles? IYSWIM

cheers smile

What would happen if you were honest and things changed. Your circumstances changed or whatever and you knew you were going a couple of thousand over what was agreeed. Massive wallet impact I guess.

How could anyone ever prove anything if you did.... say 'accidentally' over-run your mileage allowance by 25K miles or so?

I believe they go on MOTs.

My XJ8 is on 3000 miles per year. I have to give exact speedo mileage when I renew.

It becomes an issue if you claim. Or it CAN be.

Yes I also gave a speedo mileage when I renewed.

Back in 2005/6 I went over my 7k limit in my TVR. I was in N Italy at the time. I just rang them and they extended for around £70 from memory.

Limited my milage to 4k per year and was getting a bit too close towards the end of the year so I called them up and they said they were not too bothered if it's only a couple of hundred miles but they MAY refuse to pay out if you do thousands over.

Basically you are giving them an opportunity not to pay out so the following year I paid the £12 extra to increase it to 6k!

They didn't ask for my milage but they would be inspecting paperwork if I needed to claim.

For the piddling amounts involved it's not worth the aggro IMO.

Previous cars I have owned the insurer wanted a signed declaration of what the mileage was, current insuer didn't want anything, I would imagine as has been previously stated if any claims arise they will check MOT's and service/repair invoices

I have had limited mileage policies on bikes and never been asked to confirm mileage. I suppose it 'might' become a problem if/when a claim was made...

I was insured last year on a 4k mileage policy with Adrian Flux.

I called them about half way through the policy and it was about £110 to change to an unlimited mileage policy.

I have had a couple of vehicles on limited mileage policies for a few years now, one particular company ask for the speedo reading at every renewal, the other company don't. On asking the question about *going over* both said that cover would revert to *3rd party only* for any mileage over the agreed limit, along with no "extras" ie, legal aid, breakdown etc.

I have been on limited mileage for years now. Never have I been asked to show my mileage.
Tell them you have a tracker on the other hand and they want to know when it was fitted, by who, which one is it etc with copies or receipts and signed declarations.

Never been asked for proof of mileage either. With the three companies I've used. Always come in well under anyway.

Even if they did, who is to say that someone else didnt do 20k miles on a different policy/even on DOC cover

i've never been asked for proof

also...

in a couple of years when it looked like i was going to exceed the mileage, a quick phone call and agreed extra miles at no additonal cost ( kind of makes a mockery of the limit )

No one should be doing 20k miles on DOC cover. If they are then they are taking the piss.

DOC cover is designed to allow people to drive another car in occasional situations.

It allows you to borrow someone’s estate to pick up a sofa, use a mates car while yours is in the garage, or drive a drunk mate home in his own car.

If you’re doing 20k miles in someone else’s car you should be a named driver on that policy.
