Why do motorists get pulled onto the Motorway hard shoulder? We all know this is one of the most dangerous parts of the motorway. Given that most cars have a rear facing matrix, how about a "follow me" sign to the nearest exit?

ive often wondered about that too......i got pulled on the m25 between the st albans and south mimms junctions (south mimms was only about a mile further on) yet even though i jestured to the officer that i would pull off at the exit (for his safety as well as my own) he jestured back that he wanted me to stop there and then......which i did think quite strange considering the terrible accidents that happen.

saying that, the bib that stopped me was a top man and let me off with a warning for my 'slight' lapse.

Convenience....unavailablity of junctions....problems with the other driver not understanding your intentions/speaking English...

Oh and we've always done it...(which usually isn't a very good reason at all... )

If the police car is in front, I guess the person following would have a good chance to peel off and evade the police if they were lead through any junctions? On the motorway itself there is really nowhere else to go.
