They dont so much think they are above the law as more wafting around somewhere outside it.

I guess that the belief will never have any legal standing, since the state refuse to enter a contract with them to uphold their beliefs.

We've had a few threads on this subject. Some of these people are deluded, some are dishonest, and many are just selfish and ill educated. Their notions of how the law works are bizarre.

There are 2 basic problems with this.

The first is that there are a helluva lot of them, and they are on the increase. Can they all be mentally ill?

The second is that on some issues they do have a point. The State is overbearing and far too powerful in many respects. The current powers of the Revenue for example are completely unacceptable and open to abuse from overbearing individuals.

The second point provides no basis for the freeloons' antics. The power of the State can be resisted through parliament (when it does its job, which is not always, but sometimes), by a responsible media, and through the law. The very courts which the freenutters deplore provide a powerful bulwark against State power.

Many of those who have fallen for the freeman nonsense show the modern characteristic of solipsism, a characteristic rather promoted by the internet. Many of the mug punters are simply ill educated and lacking in powers of critical thinking. Some of the freeman gurus are fraudsters who prey on their gullible followers to make money.

Would be great to see a Freeman coming on here and trying to defend his/her right to travel without valid insurance, driving licence, road fund licence, MOT etc and see some of our more eloquent posters absolutely tearing into them.

I've only just read the links... so no 'freeman' here, but I'll give it a go if the alternative is the discussions losing focus...

Taking the lead I will simply ask all here:

"What is the difference is a banknote offering to promise to pay a fine for a Government sanction and my personal note to do so?"
