Child molestors are anyway "otherwise law-abiding people" who "do not deserve to be persecuted".

Good lord, it would take giant brass spheres between one's thighs to say something like that in public.

Remember the biker who got put in jail for doing over 150mph a couple of years back, well in the local paper, the day he was sentenced, he made the headline and small article in in a corner was a peodophile getting off the hook! what type of world do we live in!

Just another step in the drive to demonise motorists.

You could always leave him some feedback at his website:-

www.johannhari.com/contact.php

The rest of his articles are similarly..... 'angry student' too:-

Indeed - I usually like the independent, but was incensed by this this! JH consistently fails to examine the evidence before spouting off his 0.02$. It seems most of it is for maximum irritation of the objects of his own persoinal dislike or prehaps some perverse self aggrandisment rather than for any practical purpose, political or otherwise.

In the end he's just another dope who took the government figures as read without doing any research - poor journalism in my book.

Used to enjoy this newspaper, it said in the title what it stood for. Sadly, like so many things it has gone onto the slippery slope, hence why I stopped my purchase some years ago.

Axe murderers are "otherwise law abiding citizens" too.

What a vacuous comment to make.

The man's an utter buffoon.

The full text of the article is on his feedback site, as per the URL a few articles ago.

Don't bother reading it if you want to keep your blood pressure low.

Unbelievable:

"Speed cameras are the ASBOs for the middle class, a way of punishing their largest (and most lethal) act of anti-social behaviour".

This guy is incredible. How on earth did he make it out of school?

Just made the mistake of reading the WHOLE article...

How does 80mph on the motorway equaite (sp?) with forcing a child to do something truly appalling, and leaving them scarred for life both* mentally and physically??

What a foolish article. May he rot.

* I was nearly physically sick when I once heard of a child that would need life-long colostomy to get over the abuse. Strangely enough I consider speeding to be so unconnected that I find myself really upset at being put into this category.

I really believe you have to be pretty unhinged to equate travelling faster than a (usually too low) limit with child molestation.

How hysterical can you get?

Criminals are "otherwise law abiding citizens" when not commiting crime.

So lets not persecute criminals.

Let them all free.

If you want to get your reply in the paper, they must have your e-mail by 4pm, must supply phone numbers and postal adresses though.

I really doubt they would publish what my husband wrote.

As for
Don't they wake up at night, hoping against hope that there had been a speed camera on the road that day?
My husband has rephrased it to

"Don't they wake up at night wishing that they had taken their parental responsibilities more seriously and taught their children the Green Cross Code, or not let them play out on that busy road without adequate adult supervision?"

As for the crack about paedophiles not killing as many children.... has he any idea how many of their victims either develop dire sexual disease as result, go on to take their own lives, or even grow up to do this to another child, thus continuing the vicious circle?

There is a big difference between blatant OTT speeding and a drift over a speed limit, yet still driving at a safe speed for the road and still able to anticipate and avoid hazards.
Your liberty to speed has to be weighed against my liberty not to be run over
Mr Hari has the same responsibility of courtesy when crossing the road as a the driver using the road. It iis called using crossings provided, looking left, and right and left, and continuing to listen and look for any form of traffic before he steps off the kerb. Because if he fails to do this the speed of the car is immaterial!

As for his comment on pollution....and making "pointless journeys". There will be another car on that school run next term .... ours! (At great inconvenience to us as well!) Why? Because we have 4 children of our own and two foster children (besides one on way ). It will cost us £400 pa per child to place them on school bus. It is cheaper - even with current fuel costs - to drop them off ourselves - by car! Und why do we have to pay this whopping fee to use the school bus? Because .... we are employed, nice cushy well paid jobs paying wadges of tax (and they want more , law abiding people.

This hard worded letter will not hit the printing press - but we hope he coughs over his lentil stew!
