I was always under the impression that you could drive an untaxed or SORN'd vehicle to a pre-booked MOT completely legally as long as the vehicle was insured.

Someone told me the other day that it WASNT legal to drive it home again though??? which didnt make sense....
can anyone shed any light on the verbatim legal position of driving a vehicle without MOT? and what happens if it fails a test and indeed how you stand with insurance co if you have an accident (i.e. no MOT, invalid insurance = no cover)

I think you can indeed drive it to a pre-booked MOT but if it fails you are pretty much on your own unless you get it fixed and passed at garage.

However, don't do what I did earlier today and leave your house keys on the same keyring as the car ones so that you have to go back to the garage before you can get in your house! Doh!

IIRC its ok to drive to and from a pre-arranged test, and also to a garage to get any work done.

Or to any pre booked dvla inspection. Eg for newly imported vehicle to be inspected prior to being registered or an SVA.

It is perfectly legal to drive a vehicle that is untaxed and without MOT to an MOT testing station for a pre-arranged test providing it is insured, and it is perfectly legal to drive it home or to a place of repair after the test if it fails, but both journeys must be by the most direct route!
