Just had a frantic call from my dad regarding taxing his new car, Basically the V5 hasnt arrived yet, the mot certificate has gone awol hence his problems taxing it.

I understand the V5 thing isnt an issue as he has the green new owner slip but the issue lies in the fact to get a replacement mot certificate you need to provide the V5, so can anyone confirm will he be able to get a replacement with just the green slip?

You need the doc. ref. no. which is on the new owner slip. You _should_ be able to get a new certificate with just that, I'd certainly do it, you may come across an arse of a tester though.

Why does he need the certificate? Tax online and the system checks all paperwork online. No need to 'produce' anything.

Tax disc then goes to the last owner.

Yes and you need either the V11 document or the reference number from the V5 which seems to be different from the one on the new owner slip

Do you still have to show the MOT 'certificate'?

I understood there's no such thing now, it's all online. They give you a bit of paper which I was told it a receipt, but it does confusingly say on it that it's the certificate.

Yeah according to the old man the woman in the Post Office said he needed it, may not be the case with the full V5 though?

That stumped me when we recently bought a car. The dealer said it had every MOT cert from new, and had a fresh one only a month old. When I got the car home i couldn't fine the new one. It took me a while before I spotted than its now a paper receipt rather than a proper certificate.

AIUI the paper certificate is still the legal proof of the MoT test, though obviously interested agencies can still check online databases.

You can look them up on line. Can't remember where but either DVLA or YouGov or somesuch.

It not only gives the cert. details but shows advisories that some sellers like to tear up and throw away!
