Professor David Greenaway will be spelling out government's proposals to crack down on the alarmingly growing numbers of uninsured drivers on our roads

Course - we can all tell him how - get rid of scameras and hire more Dibbles!

Under proposals so far - police will be able to access a database to identify these drivers ( Strassen has already told us about MIIC and MID)

Further powers will be given to clamp and seize these vehicles (but "Traffic Cops" has already shown this has happened Must be something else to be proposed - this article in "Mail" says "for first time!"

But again - how can this be achieved without cop presence in any case? Scameras are not very good at this at all!

According to "Mail" police are saying that there has been rise of 50% in some areas of hit and run incidents. Possibly down to uninsured drivers afraid of consequences.

Per "Mail" London cops claim 42% increase in hit and runs within last 5 years - 50% increase in Ks and 27% increase in SIs.

Top of the police pops Lancs - recorded whopping 32% increase in KSI hit and runs, Merseyside 24%, and Essex (middle placed in pop chart) a 43% increase.

Leics, Someerset have 44% increase according to this, and the police are worried.

Scotland Yard spokesman:

"The Force is unable to explain the surge in hit and run accidents"

Throw away cars, fewer cops, more scams = more chancers, twazaks, pretzels )

Police state that they believe failing to stop at scene of RTAC can be attributed to a number of reasons. Some may be connected to unlawful us of vehicle - no insurance, documents, MOT, licence, DWD, or they have been speeding or drinking. ) Not on heroin, then?

Spokesman said - they may also be connected with another crime. ( another good reason for more Dibbles then!

She went on to say (per "Mail"'s article by Ben Taylor and Andrew Levy) that majority leave scene due to emotional shock and inability to deal with scene and consequences. (Perhaps so - but this type are also perhaps more likely to come forward later. Or at least - the genuine law abiders do!).

Last year - almost 50K made compensation claims after accidents with uninsured drivers. An estimated £500m was shelled out - and we get bill of ca £400 pa on average. Direct Line have announced they will not penalise customers unlucky enough to have scrunch with uninsured driver. But it has to be a non fault and customer must have fully comp policy with the group.

But - bottom line is here - we need BiBs back to pre-scam levels at least - and more besides. Machines to do the job? Pah!

Call me a miserable old git but i genuinely believe that the massive increase in hit-and-runs is simply down to the fact that SO many people in society now simply don't give a s**t about anyone else.

A large proportion of society seem to care about themselves and themselves only. No-one else matters in their little world. These are the same people who push in at queues, who never say 'please' or 'thank you', who allow their kids to run riot round the streets. Self-centered, ignorant people. Their numbers seem to increase every day.

We all know that no punishment is given to these people when they are caught, so that fear can't be the reason for them driving away. Dunno, will be interested to read what other PHers think.......

I think another problem is those "living on the edge". In the past only the hard core criminals would drive around without insurance and tax. Now we see a shift in the demographic curve caused by less police/more scameras. People who wouldn't have risked it before are now because they are been driven to it. Risk/benefit. Drive around with false plates, chances of been scameraed high, chances of been pulled low. Now you have a family guy on 9 points, any more and he's banned, losses job, house etc...the risk benfit shifts.

It would be interesting to see which counties have the highest number per capita.

Me thinks Durham might have the least despite being being a relatively poor county.

Its obvious why there are more hit and runs.
The country has more asylum seekers etc. The goverment give them an amount of money to buy a car (as its cheaper than taxis etc). But they don't bother with insurance.

Its not just asylum seekers, its also youths who cant afford the extortionate premiums charged by the ins comps. Its banned drivers who think they wont get caught becuase of lack of BiBs on the roads, its people who are probably worried about whats gonna happen to their premiums if they stick around. I doubt its as easy as blaming 1 particular group of people.

I saw a fly on the wall doc on BBC4 about a kid on an estate who had to go to court because he was caught driving without insurance. He drove to court, got a driving ban, drove back home from court. This was a young english chap living on a council estate. Im sure he is not the only one who has done this but this is the kind of defiance that is happening all over england.

I myself am facing a ban and have been told by many friends and colleagues to just drive while banned, they simply presume that you wont get caught as long as you dont speed. Being a responsible adult i will not do it but it just shows how attitude has changed towards the law.

When a court fine is less than a years insurance and you are allowed to make repayments of 50 pence a month for the fine what do you expect.

I agree that peoples attitudes towards one another has changed a lot over the years. I remember when i was younger (80's) we used to have street parties where all the street would come out and have a great time. Nowadays the neighbour calls the police on you if you park outside his house, damn!
