Just drove home up the M40 from M25 and as I approached a gantry a red cross flashed above my lane.

Checked speedo and I was doing about 90, which as it was getting on for 10pm, totally dry and with very light traffic (which I guess was all doing about 80 or so) was in no way dangerous.

But as we all know, 'safety cameras' have sod all to do with real road safety.

The red cross means: proceed no further in that lane, don't think it has anything to do with cameras.

Yup, the gantry signs are only used for controlling traffic:

If it flashed quickly it might have been a mistake by the operator, or perhaps a self-test of the system (to check the bulbs are lit).
