A while ago my car was broken into, as I was on my way home from a job interview it still contained my passport, which the potential employer had requested to see.

It was handed in at the local police station 2 days later and is now back in my possession.

What I'd like to know is, what's the worst that can happen?

ID fraud/pulled up on mysterious charges in some foreign country if I try and use it?

Any ideas?

Did you report it as stolen to the UKPS?

"Note that you will no longer be able to legally use a passport once it has been formally reported as lost or stolen and subsequently cancelled by us. As we share information with the police, Immigration Service and other appropriate authorities, any attempt to use a cancelled passport is likely to result in the holder being detained. "

I was going to but it was recovered before I filled the forms in. The police know it's been stolen though so they may have shared the data - guess I'll have to call up and find out..

Working with Government systems, I highly doubt that to be true.

Best thing is call UKPS and explain, I have found them really useful and give prompt service. I sometimes wonder if the bad publicity they get is a result of journos trying to drum up a story.
