ACPO have revealed accident stats for the first 6 months of this year concerning those where vehicle occupants haven't been wearing seat belts.

88% of accidents where the driver/passenger wasn't wearing seat belt have resulted in serious injury/death.

There were only 0.043% of accidents where the passenger was trapped underwater, unable to free themselves due to the seat belt. Should silence the strange minority who use this reason for non wearing.

Ah one of my favourite rants as well. Why the hell do so many people not wear one? Are they some how immune? Street you pullem and I'll take them onto the plastic surgery and ENT wards and show them the damage a steering wheel can do to some ones face. Choice 3 points or a day helping out on said ward. I know which one would be more effective.

Sometimes we have to go "two up" in the trucks (help with lifting etc) and you would be amazed at how few put a belt on. The screen is a good 4ft high with absolutely nothing to stop them becoming airborne.

Scary, but if they are over the age limit what can I do?

You're right regarding them, if they're over the limit. However, I would insist on them being belted up if I was you. I've been to several RTC's where the unbelted passengers have caused serious injuries for the seat belted driver.

Stay safe Steve,

What makes me laugh, are the idiots that plug in the seat belt - but tuck it behind them and sit on it!

Do they think we can't see that!?

More importantly, do they think that after they have travelled through the windscreen after a -40g impact, they will be able to hang on to it in a last minute 'a la matrix stylee' - wrong again!

Just like the 'arm of consciousness' which goes up automatically to cover said offence when passing a BiB(you know who you are!), or that last minute scratch behind the ear - very amusing!

Belt up and safe , everyone

There's a lot of shoulder scratching in my area...Obviously contageous..

I very rarely let off drivers who aren't wearing seatbelts. The law has been in for long enough and the extra burden on the hospitals, insurance companies, fellow drivers is unacceptable in my opinion.

Just remembered...I'm always interested in how people who used hackney cabs and private hire vehicles don't wear their belts. I'm not talking about the drivers, but the paying passengers.

Afterall, knowing what I do about the type of drivers of such vehicle (some drivers, not all, I know)..and the condition of some of these vehicles..(some vehicles, not all, I know)...these are the very times, you really really need to wear a seat
belt!

Evenin' Street. I'm a private hire driver (one of the better ones i hope!), and it's always a job to get passengers to wear a belt. 'I'm paying you to take me somewhere, not lecture me' seems to be the most common attitude. The scum even say 'he won't wear a belt!' when I ask for a child to be belted up. I was told to mind my own business when I pointed out that the belt shouldn't go over the child when on the mothers lap (2 in one belt!). The arguments I have when trying to explain that I'm licenced for 4 but 2 adults and 3 kids try to get in are increasing. 'It's only a baby it won't matter' etc. I could go on...... Anyway, I always wear my belt, even though I'm exempt in some cases.

When are you guys going to realise the truth?

You could make it 10 goes of the ducking stool and 400 lashes followed by a lifetime ban, castration and the electric chair and you would pursuade 5 extra people to wear them.

I am not disputing that seatbelts save lives, they most certainly do. In order to convince people you need to establish their trust.

This would be best done by a freindly faced cop telling us all on TV. Especially if he was retired and no longer in the pay of the political trash.

The worst way to convince us is to get Blair and his gang of stalinist halfwits to make it 3 points then we will just get annoyed and hate u.

I don't know about the truth...but I know this...

People who have been fined £30..tend to remember it in future....There are obviously some very rich people and some very dumb ones who aren't bothered about the fine...but I find that people are more bothered about their wallets than what the steering column will do to their chests and the windscreen to their face..

Well I wear a seatbelt almost always and if I dont it is for 300yd journeys. Nowadays If I get stopped I am very polite but see it as more Blair trying to rip me off than any kind of beneficial service. You lot are just pawns in the grand scheme of things, driving forward to a future of mediocre everything, along with the rest of us. Sorry but there has to be a major shift in the way our democracy works before anything powered by government will be taken seriously again. Nothing personal I am sure like me you try your best to do a great job.

Sounds like a perfect situation for Trial by Ordeal... put the non-seat-belt-wearer in a car with no seat belts and wham it into a concrete block at 30mph. If they come through uninjured they don't need seat belts...

No offence taken friend...

Of course it was the Conservative party who was in power when the law on seat belts was first introduced...

There are very few people who argue or disagree with me when they've been stopped for failure to wear seat belt...It seems like a law everyone knows about and if caught they put their hands up 99% of the time..

With the greatest respect to Tabs:

Hackney Carriage - Highly regulated & controlled service.

Private Hire......?

There is a difference. Have you seen some of the minicabs in Slough?

If you are passenger on a coach in France and gendarme decide to spot check coach - passenger gets on the spot fine for not wearing seat belt.

French are targetting this with beaucoup de force at the moment ....

What are police powers in this country regarding this?

Depends on whether the coach was speeding or not.
