Buying a write Off !

Okay, what's the crack then ?

If someone has a cat C or D write off (and has been using it for 2 years like that - couple of dents on a low value car) and they sell it on, is there anything to stop the buyer using the car ?

I ask cause a mate has a C reg Cavalier Sri which we have sort of agreed a price (okay we're in negotiation) that's pretty low. The car needs a bumper and a door (both of which I can get for next to nothing.

Technically this person shouldn't have been driving it if it has been written off!
after the fixing of the parts etc... you have to take it through a test (sort of SVA), to prove it's road worthyness.

Personally I wouldn't touch a write off at all!

Not a problem. Just bear in mind that it will have a HPI marker to show it has been written off and that the value will probably be about half book but as it is older this is not really a problem I imagine.

Make sure you are happy with it's condition from a safety aspect.

If asked if it has been written off, it may affect your insurance, but not many companies ask that.

Edited to add:

The VI or what ever they are called this week, and the DVLA have brought in the VIC (Vehicle Identity Check). As usual they made a hash of it and nobody had a clue what is required.

Checking the website reveals:
Any car that is notified to DVLA on or after 7th April 2003 as having been written off (category A,B or C), regardless of the date of accident, will require a VIC .

As long as you are not attempting to ring it then shouldn't be a problem

I need to check his story, but he says that the insurnace company priced up the damage (on a car worth 300 quid with no damage) and said he could keep the car and have the money for the car - If you get what I mean) Since then he's had it insured and taxed and moted and has done 30K . I'm sure it's road worthy, even with the dents it has, but will this test want them fixed ?

With the bumper and door I reckon I can get it ship shape for under 50 quid plus 25 quid (he wants 50) for the car. The going rate for cars like this is £300 to £600 max.

A mate used to work in a body shop. One of the 'write-offs' included a Nova which somebody had broken into, damaging the area around the drivers door lock. Otherwise, it was a very tidy car.

Another example was a Scirroco with all the glass smashed.

Insurance write-off simply means uneconomical to repair, nothing more.

On failing to find this info on the web - a link would be useful, I phoned the DVLA and they said that provided I had V5, an MOT and car was road worthy -( not the same thing), tax and insurance there was no issues. On transferring the V5 into my name there would be no issues, and my insurance company might tell me it's on a list somewhere and they might not, so best to get the reg number and check with insurance. If they have no problem then, no issue.

It says on one of those links that the V5 must be surrendered when a car is written off, is that correct?

I ask as a relative of mine had their (low-value) car written off after it was broken into the damage was a dented door/broken dash trim, but rather than settle he took the pay out and I think purchased the car back from the insurance co. and fixed the damage for about £40 in parts!

not sure if he surrendered the V5 - or was told he needed to?

so if its just a write-off because of some minor damage - rather than a big smash (chassis/transmission damage etc.) which would make it dangerous to drive should he have to get a replacement V5 and have it VIC'd to be able to drive it again?

Just spoken to VOSA - thanks for link - using telephone number at bottom of web page.

Gave the reg number : They said : at present there is no VIC flag so provided you fill in V5 correctly with new details of ownership it's not an issue.

if you crash a previously written off car the insurance will pay out peanuts.

Ok, on a £50 chavalier that's probably not an issue
