In two new tests, car owners will be able to let insurance companies monitor their driving via new technology in exchange for lower rates.

The technology will track some combination of when, where, how far and how fast they drive, giving insurers a way to reward low-risk driving.

Now just experiments, the technology might be a glimpse of the future of car insurance.

The trials will begin this year.

will someone please explain the govt obsession with car persecution? I mean the total annual fatals are the lowest in europe (if figures can be believed) more people are killed by paperclips. The industry generates an enormous amount of cash............oh, I get it

Personally, I can see the idea making some sense. It'll certainly stuff Mr. 40mph Everywhere Numpty.

It would be better if some account could be made for the environment. Unfortunately, if that were possible we'd have no defence against the "computerised driver" as the whole point is that only an knowledgeable human can judge what is safe driving and what is not.

As usual, these things are tried voluntarily with a carrot for those (naive twits) who comply.

Then, naturally, it gets introduced a bit more. Stealth tactics it's called and one of the best at this is, of course, the government. They then get the media to explain how "reasonable" the idea is with the usual "if you've got nothing to hide....".

That might be true, but slowing down traffic increases the traffic on the roads.

Obviously the same number of cars and journeys (roughly) will apply, but if it takes twice as long to get somewhere, cars occupy the road space for double the amount of time, doubling the cars/metre figure.

If they monitored my driving for a month my premium would at least triple

The conservatives (hopefully) will sort all this rubbish out. I don't even like the conservatives, but they've got my vote if the car persecution stops. They want to come down hard on clampers now - good stuff.
The labour lot are just a load of control freaks, and generally not that nice people. I've met quite a few of them (Blair, Prescott, Ben, etc)
The nicest was actually Robin Cook, the most obnoxious - well, you guess.
