Just for the pleasure of scandalising a few people and holding the record, even if you could never claim it?

The scenario - a Gatso on a suitably straight, smooth and isolated bit of road, scouts ahead and behind looking out for cops/other traffic, an absence of CCTV, 4.00 Sunday morning, covered number plates, quick blast past the Gatso at 180?

Have been mulling this over for over here in France where the current speeding record was set by a Brit down in the south of France in his M3 - he was caught at 155 mph (I think he went to prison, albeit briefly ).

Would the authorities stifle the information if they couldn't prosecute the driver? They'd know that you were taking the piss out of them so they might not want it in the press. Hmmm

Not a speeding record, but I've often thought about laying a message on the road, getting a suitably anonymous vehicle, removing plates and taking a photo of the message for the gatso film checkers!

But if you cover your plates then you don't get the photos.

I'm waitaing for the day when either I don't have long to live or I intended to give up driving, then I'll show the Fers

I'd love to know what local speed records actually are!
Does anyone know the highest road speed recorded/ prosecuted for in Britain.

Despite that, the answer would still be no. I've never been tempted to risk life or licence!

The UK record used to be just over 150 mph set on the A3 between London and Guildford, but that's going back quite a few years now - someone must have got caught at more than that by now!

I'm sure I heard of a sportsbike rider being caught for speeds in the 170-180 range, but I don't know any details.

I thought it was about 180 mph on the M1 round about 1964 by either an Aston Martin or an AC Cobra on test for the Le Mans 24 hour race. Wasn't the driver Jack Sears, gentleman farmer from Norfolk?

Best wishes all,
Dave.

We've discused nipping through the Specs on the M6 at 160'ish awaiting the summons, putting the car back into standard trim then rolling up at court with a few guys from Saab to point out the Vmax is only 127mph and we we're doing 70mph at the time therefore discrediting Specs and speed cameras in general and ridding this once fine country of the grey scurge

When the Kawasaki ZZR1100 first appeared, my mate was one of the mechanics at the local dealer. He claimed to be the first person to do Darlington bypass at 170...

Ah yes, the A3 from London to Guildford...I went to college in Guildford one weekend a month for two years and can honestly say that the only truly memorable part of it all was getting past Kingston, then Chessington, then putting my foot to the floor.

In fact, the highlight of those weekends were probably the drives in on Saturdays & Sundays. As for the drives home, forget it. Might as well not even have had a 4th gear...

Well a mag, I think Fastcar documented a 200mph attempt on the M1 in a Supra. Just have people at least 5 trawling the area with eyes, laser detectors and radar detectors, (jammers if you're feeling bad). Then get the speeder to turn his lights off at night in a dark patch like the A40 has, then escort him at speed.

Thinking about it, I've driven a few times on the A1 towards Peterborough and always thought you could hit some scary speeds there, particularly it was early morning.

I think I remember seeing a clip of Supra on this road that I once downloaded of Kazaa doing 180+. Just as well there were 4 lanes!

My dream upgrade is a yellow LCD rear number plate, that normally displays your proper reg, but changes at the touch of a button to something more, errr... "appropriate".

In fact, hooked up to a GPS gatso detector, you wouldn't even need to touch the button.

I like that, but it would be even more fun in something REALLY unlikely to achieve such speeds. Didn't someone make a V8 Rover engined Reliant Robin?

I'm guessing that 185mph is the fastest recorded speed but no gatso and no pull by BiB, as no speed limit in place at that time.

It was a reliant kitten (the 4 wheel variant)...

Though there was a jet-engined milkfloat on ebay a while back.....
