Do SPECS ping untaxed notification?

Got to pick up a car which is SORN currently, there's a possibility I may not be able to tax it before journey home as MOT may be out (owner in Saudi and doing deal with family member so paperwork is a bit hit and miss til he's back). The route back covers quite a few SPECS installs - do these ping up untaxed cars or is it just going to be ANPR cameras and patrol vehicles that will ping it?

I don't see why people get so precious about this - as long as the insurance isn't voided and the new owner is going to get the car taxed as soon as possible then what's the big deal? Who is "losing out"?

MOT is another matter as I suspect getting a tug with neither tax nor MOT is not going to impress the police.

I'd suggest collecting car and booking for an MOT straightaway, either locally to yourself OP, or near the collection point. If it passes then I'd have no problem driving it home - however I'd try taxing it online first.

Whilst I should've expected it I wasn't expecting the burning torches and pitch forks so soon! The car will be insured - never driven a car without insurance and never will (cue all the insurance invalid rants).

I'm not advocating anything - I need to get a car home in a specific time frame and just asked about SPECs.

Can I assume no one so far knows the answer?

• edit* Posted before last poster - I don't actually know whether the car is insured currently - I'd be insuring it on the day so it wouldn't have time to flag up on insurance database for online tax but good point - I'll try and find out whether it's insured currently and look into the online option. i've never bought a car from someone who isn't in the country before so it's a learning experience.

What is the answer to the SPECs question though?

Book an MOT round the corner from your destination as already said. You are permitted to drive an UN MOTd vehicle to an pre-booked MOT, it still needs to be roadworthy though.

The car has been MOT'd every year even though the owner is away for most of that time - it's absolutely roadworthy. OK booking an MOT is a definite then.

You will however need the V5c reference number.

Although this might get the car logged as taxed on the database, the disc will be sent to the RK at the time the application for tax is made - so it will be sent to the previous keeper. It depends how much you trust them. He/she could just receive the disc and then cash it in. If possible, it's better to do it at a post office using the V5 or new keeper slip.

It matters not where the MOT is booked. You can drive to and from pass or fail, providing its not something silly like tyres that are wrong.

why not just get a recovery firm to pick it up for you, small fee , no risk, and you dont waste hours of your life picking it up??

If the new owner is certain the car is in a roadworthy condition [legal tyres, decent brakes, working lights], book an MOT at a local station [to the new owners address], ensure it has Insurance coverage [either on a new policy, or on a DayInsure type cover], and drive it home.

Still a lot less hassle than trailering across the country, not to mention the fact that I drove around for nearly a month with no MOT last year due to dimness, so I would suspect actually getting a tug to be unlikely.

You are correct, there is, but that possibility is something you simply have to factor into your plans. If you can prove that the test is pre-booked, no law is being broken. I got a tug once. The BiB were a bit sniffy that the booked MOT was 150 miles from where I picked up the car. Given that I had over 100 miles still to go I wasn't in the mood for a protracted discussion and politely asked them where in the relevant legislation there was any stipulation regarding where the test must be carried out.

I told them I had the relevant details with me (name, address, contact number) which they could verify if they wished. I also mentioned that, having made the call, detaining me further would be counterproductive in enabling me to keep my appointment. They huffed and puffed a little more and then let me on my way.

Thanks for all responses so far - I'm hoping there may be some ticket left in which case I'll get the tax done on the day at nearest PO. Otherwise it's getting booked in for MOT locally.
