Law abiding citizen, Sandra H with squeaky clean licence was puzzled when she was ordered to report to a car park by a traffic warden.

When she got there - Britain's most wanted "criminal" found no less than 30 BiBs waiting for her. They took the 57 year old Granny's fingerprints - in case she was lying about her age, identity ... fined her £30 and sent her on her way after 20 minute interrogation.

What had she done?

- Purchased a personalised number plate, taken it to reputable garage to be fit - only they used the wrong colour screw - a black one - which made the 11 on her plate look like H.

Anyone with half a brain would read number plate correctly - and Granny Sandra was not amused at being mugged in this way. A warning would have been sufficient and the AA agree.

West Yorks police claim they had set up this road block to nick people for number of offences - including illegal immigration. In morning rush hour in Batley - hundreds of law abiding motorists were delayed, stopped and interrogated on their way to work!

Looks like they did not find any "illegal" immigrants or Mr Big of Batley - but raked in fortune on minor nit picking items....

I refer you to this thread as St. can put it much better than I!

I will say one thing, a reputable garage wouldn't have put a black screw in between her personalised number plate to make it two II an H!

Absolutely...

Don't mess and alter with registration marks..They are official things to identify your vehicle. If you change them in any way..expect to get pulled and the associated consequences. Screws and such like should match the background colour in the place where they are fitted.

Sympathy with such people....zero..

I live close to where this goes on, complete piss take, you are flagged down to go into a big niteclub car park, your car tank is dipped if its diesel(red), the DSS check to see if you are a claimant, your car is vitually Mot'd, immegration are there, can take you up to 40 minutes to get through, there must be 20 personnel there from various departments.
Last time some cars got broken into at my business premises and I called the BiB I was told quote "we dont come out to car crime anymore".
What a surprise, too busy looking for wrong coloured screws

True - You got my playing around with the story - emphasing the H in Granny Sandra Hughes surname.

But 30 BiBs, goodness knows how many other officials for "fishing" trip in rush hour at one spot of Batley? Bit dramatic - and what about the fly-by-nights who turned around, or rushed down side- street because of standing traffic.

Lady was miffed at being interrogated for 20 minutes to prove her ID, despite showing her library ticket, utilities bill and some other document proving her ID, having her prints and DNA taken - and now on a police file somewhere.

According to the story in paper - car was purchased new last March and she asked supposedly reputable dealer to put this personal S11 whatever number on at time.

Perhaps she should now sue garage for tarnishing her reputation in this way...

Stop whining...you pay your taxes etc don't you? Well others dont. They also don't pay insurance, don't have driving licences, are wanted for offences etc etc..This is how we catch them. Big operations netting everybody and the innocent ones have nothing to worry about. Yes, your time will be inconvenienced............but woopyindo! It's not 'taking the piss' as you put it...it's being policed and righting the wrongs..'Taking the piss' might be getting done for 33mph in a 30zone..or scameras in the middle of nowhere.

That's incorrect and you're simplifying what you've been told, i've no doubt. If the cars were broken into for the stereos, the chances of finding fingerprints in the car would be zilch. So why do you NEED to see a police officer? Just to vent you anger at? or whinge at perhaps? Cars that have been stolen, will be visited by police officers and likely subject to some forensic examination.

I suggest you stop watching 'The Bill' and such like on the television and wake up to what it's like in the real world. Very much like I fully expect the car dealer that I bought my car from to state "We don't move many of these" and offer me all money, when I go to part-exchange my car for the next one. He mananged to 'move' it to me in the first place. Sound familiar..

Another one who knows how to police better than the police..

Starting to get like the Soviet Union around here.
Not allowed to do this that or the other.
Cops stopping people cos they "might" be criminals....they "might" not be too!
Showing your identity to "officials" to see if youre who you say you are, having fingerprints taken....what next? a DNA swab at the roadside? An intimate examination by some perverted Soham style pedo cop maybe?
In my oh so humble opinion, tactics like these are being persued simply because of laziness on the part of the officials who "think" it makes a big difference, when in actual fact i seriously doubt it does.
Oh sure, youll usually net some small fry, but for the cost of setting up these ops and all the overtime, surely itd be money better spent elsewhere?

Btw, no offence intended to any of the serving cops on this forum, im sure you all do a very good job.
I just dont agree with you guys being used in this particular way.

I appreciate your opinions deltaf and also you compliments to me and the other Bib on here..

It's just that this sort of road check does achieve some very good results.

I must concede though, that it's not done often enough IMO. I think you will see less and less of them with the increase in ANPR technology though..

I have not watched The Bill in a long time. I would guess that if The Bill was anything like the real world, it would show about half of all officers operating mobile scameras.

Fingerprints would not be taken - just a slice of her wallet!

Oh and if it were a reputable garage im sure shed have a come back and they would of course refund her fine
Unless the 11 was made to look like an "H" in which case tough for buying a cheap personal plate that she had to muck around with! Buy one that already had an H!

Oh isnt life just black and white

Just as a comparison...

On a recent return through Dover, from a very enjoyable week in the Czech Republic, i was waved thru passport control, only to be stopped by a member of HMC&E, frequently portrayed as SS rejects by many (with some justification)

Down went my window, to be greeted by a cheery "Good afternoon Sir (yes...he said SIR ) may i take a look in your boot...PLEASE (yes...he said please)"

Wishing to be co-operative, and knowing i only had a small amount of booze in the boot (well, you have to do it) i replied with a polite "by all means".

Her Maj's bloke opened the boot, had a quick look without touching a thing and came back with "that's fine thanks, have a safe journey"

Maybe he should be training the people who do these roadside checks, as in my experience they're a miserable shower

Have a nice day.

Ah yes, but you know these pesky terrorists and their crafty ways.

If they want to fool bib and go about their business incognito, a common thick of theirs is to put a numberplate screw in the wrong place to alter a letter. Presto - invisible! (But not now of course, because the forces of law and order have sussed that little ruse.)
