The BUS

Per Sunday Express...

Police in Derbyshire no longer have to worry about getting clamped whilst parking the patrol car. In fact - they have run out of patrol cars.

Derbyshire cops have been give free bus passes to patrol a vast rural beat...

PC Cross (yup - that's his name and he is - cross and partner PC Fetherston were told to take the bus to cover 175 square mile beat between Ashebourne and Hatton. They say this makes it "difficult to access village crimes without a patrol car"

On the plus side - the two bobbies say it gives them a chance to chat to fellow passengers on the bus and socialise - but critics say "a bus does not have flashing blue lights and woo-woos!" And that it sends out the wrong message to criminals...

Mr Davis (Shadow Home Sec) says "It is a mockery of the Police Service if we do not have resources to provide a patrol car"

Derbyshire Police (who have issued electric bike to one bobby) claim it is not issue of no patrol cars - but simply to ensure bobbies are on the beat... a visible presence...

PC Cross says "It is a huge beat and we cannot get across the area. Buses run to timetables...and either none come or three arrive at once ... But at least I get to chat to people and freduce the fear of crime..."

=====================

A good idea? Fors and against like everything else - but surely a rural beat of 175 sq miles requires at least one patrol car?

And I am sure we can all think of some amusing one liners on this story too

I remember when i first joined the job and I was not qual to drive, we took the bus rather than walking the beat if it was raining etc etc. We would get off in the outskirts of town in villages then have a wander and get back on the bus.

I think in this situation its the media trying to make this into a big thing, 175 sq miles is a big area, and you are never going to cover it on foot. At the end of the day if someone puts in a 999 call they are going to get a traffic car / panda going their way.

These guys are prob village beat cops who do 9-5 etc etc.
