Streetcop's thread on how to spot BIB prompted me to ask if those LED displays are legal on civilian cars.

Drove back from Bham Airport (15c (was 36 when we left Greece) and torrential rain.

Saw this display from a long way off just displaying a swirling pattern. Was installed in a Toyota Corolla

Red lights are permissible from behind, but they musn't flash...

It's not something that i've ever dealt with to be honest, but I will make some enquiries at work this afternoon.

Don't think they are legal. Although I did notice that buses now use rotating displays showing destination info.

What about the really bright forward facing LED displays on some coaches (Oxford Tube is a good one for this)

hi Steve..

It's a case of they've never been stopped or prosecuted and the trend has continued...

Rear LED displays are legal to the best of my knowledge.

There is one on sale at the moment, but they had to **** out swear words.

I have often thought about rigging one up using a LED wallboard from a callcenter.

The biggest problem is the power, you need an inverter and that pushes the price up.

Pre-set buttons hooked up with :

Thank You

Sorry - my fault

Overtake now.

TOO CLOSE !

All the above can be done with hand signals:

Thank You - driver raiss left arm.

Sorry my Fault - Driver raises left arm

Overtake now - Driver waves right arm out of window

Too Close - Paramedic puts hand on shoulder and shouts "can you hear me"
