Damn - wish we could edit titles! "BiB or Trafpol"??

I've searched the internet and the Home Office website for an hour to no avail!

Can anybody provide an address for the Home Office's Automotive Equipment Section? They apparently test and approve equipment to be fitted to police vehicles. It's nothing devious, I'm just marketing an electronic product that is ideal for police vehicle applications and I believe it may have to conform to "specification 5".

I think the place might be in Carterton.

Thanks

"Reg"

Carterton.Oxon? Next to RAF Brize Norton?

Anyway..I can't think of any website address for you, sorry..

Can you divulge what the product is..or is it secret?

It's an automatic and intelligent battery isolation switch, it automatically disconnects the battery should the lights, radio etc be left on to retain engine starting capability. It automatically reconnects in a third of a second when the ignition, headlights or brake lights come on.

It also provides spike protection to reduce the likelihood of the vehicle's electronics going into fault.

HUGE interest at the moment!

'Reg',

Not sure if this is what you are after, if not, it may be able to direct you.

The Police Scientific Development Branch (PSDB) are the who approve various types of equipment for our use. I am sure they have an automotive section;

We already have something called KRS (keyless running system)

You press a button on the dash before taking the keys out...The engine remains ticking over, even without the keys...blue lights can remain flashing while accident scene or whatever is dealt with...

Should someone get into the car, with a view to stealing it, as soon as the clutch is pressed to take the gear lever out of neutral, the engine stalls..

Good eh?

Good but expensive - not feasible to retrofit in volume

I'm aware of it on bikes but not cars.

Thanks Robocop - I already found that one but couldn't find reference to what I was looking for. I'll spend another ten minutes in there though just in case.

Nope, it's not in PSDB either

....and anyway Street, a keyless running system can't do anything about all those police vehicles lined up in police car parks with their engines off and batteries gently draining down - not so gently in some cases!

Sorry Reg, but the system is already out there for trucks. Called Battguard or similar. Switches everything off if battery drops below cranking voltage. Ideal for trucks with tail lifts etc.

Wouldn't it be better to happen before it falls below cranking voltage

Sounds like it operates via the clutch so the obvious question is.....if I don't use the clutch (which is perfectly feasible if you get the revs right) then I can get myself a nicely maintained top of the range T5!

If you can get all the way home without turning the steering wheel Joe! No keys ...remember!

Nice try though

I thought it was an offence to leave a unattended vehicle with its engine running unless it was being used to power ancilliary equipment? And I dont mean the alternator!

This sounds a lot like the Priority Start system I've got on mine. Isolates the battery if the voltage drops below 12V when the engine is off, and reconnects automatically when you go to start. One of the TVRCC members was advertising this in Sprint.

Yes GreenV8s - it's PriorityStart. Towman, BatteryGuard is a good product and has been around for several years. But it's more suitable for OE installation rather than retrofitting being a little costly and taking at least an hour to install, ours can take 15 minutes.

PriorityStart too is a good product but is aimed at a slightly different market. It has an installed base of comething like 200,000+ units in other countries
