I've recently noticed on both the M3 and M20 Police cars travelling in lane 2 (the middle lane) at 70mph whilst lane 1 is totally clear. This could be perceived to be an attempt to stop anybody passing them, both times I've driven past an indicated 75 in lane 3 whilst the majority of other motorist attempt to overtake with barely 1mph speed differential thus holding everybody up. Has anybody else come across this strange behaviour by the BiB?

Why would it make a difference if they were in lane 1 or 2?

There could be a number of reasons why they were in the middle lane, we will never know, unless they see this post and reply.

Of course it could be, as you say to stop people overtaking rolleyes

PS. Why is it strange?

Are you sure they are real BIB? Not the highways chaps?

Coz it's against the Highway Code. The same effect should be achieved by going in lane 1.

In reply to op I've always come across them doing about 60-65 allowing for 70ers to overtake. Even then there'd be a pile of wusses tailing behind the car.

Maybe it's in prep and understanding that the 80 limit is gonna happen...

No lights on, effectively it's forcing everybody to use only one lane to pass instead of two. In fairness they appeared to be local Police one was a marked up Astra rather than the usual pursuit cars used on the motorway. They definitely wasn't the highway brigade, like I said both times it "felt" like they wanted to hold up traffic flow more than they normally do by sitting in lane one at 60-65.

Take the registration number, make and model of the car report it to the police as deliberate obstruction obviously leaving no name.

So if they move to lane one what will that achieve?

If you pass them you are speeding and committing an offence, if you want them to speed you are saying you want them to speed (and god knows certain PH members would advocate the police are not above the law), perhaps they want to get to the next job as quickly as possible by doing the limit but know that certain pathetic members of society will moan if they do 75-80 as they should know better, aren't above the law, should be setting an example etc etc (RH where are you with an example?).

Interesting, but doubt it !
Legal if you are continuing in the lane you are already in at the (legal) pace that you are already doing.

Worth remembering there are very few traffic officers, so if divisional officers or CID, they tend to have little interest in traffic law and tend to be at thel standard of normal drivers!!

Sure - I know and do similar - but I doubt many have the testicular fortitude to do it to Plod.
I know I would. So long as I didn't have to change lanes (from lane 2 to lane 1) to do so. Or move back into lane 2 for a while after performing the pass to the nearside.

Otherwise a polite flash or two of the headlights would be used (and yes, I have done this. Several times).

I expect people driving marked police cars to drive safely and in accordance to rules +/or common sense.

I think it is getting to the point where divisional bobbies up and down the country are so P'd off with their jobs that they are all looking around for what they perceive to be a cushy number. Traffic comes up on the radar and before you know it, they find themselves behind the wheel of a traffic car - especially if they find themselves from an under represented group which basically means if they are not white and male they are a shoooin to get the job. Traffic can be as cushy or as busy as you choose to make it and unfortunately it now seems to be attracting a lot of people that couldn't give a flying foxtrot about traffic work.
As a result, you have people that quite frankly don't know sh#t from clay and who have to walk around to the back of a Vauxhall Cavalier to read what it says on the boot (I kid you not!) when asked by the control room operator for the make and model of a vehicle she had just stopped.
Driving standards nowadays are not a patch on what they were. I fully accept there are still officers out there who take pride in their driving and for who it means something to be driving a traffic car but when you see spotty kids with their heads dipped in a bottle of hair gel sat behind the wheel of a T5 with the front fog lights on because "it looks cool!" you know the battle has been lost

I have been up and down the M6 quite a few times and have sometimes encountered plod in the lake district sitting in lane 1 or 2 at 80 mph.

They seem quite happy for you to tag along, but I have once seen them blue light someone who crawled past them.

80 suits me fine.

I find that deeply worrying frown
