Speeding is scary rather than sexy say partners

Survey results released today by the Department for Transport's THINK! Road Safety campaign show what we really think of our other half's driving - and many of us are scared and angered when our partners speed.

The study reveals that among passengers over 60% believe that driving too fast increases the chances that their partner will crash. And emotions run high:

24% have felt angered by their significant other's speeding, which they think is 'irresponsible and stupid';
20% are scared, and concerned that they and the driver could be killed or injured;
14% worried about the safety of other road users.
25% admit to pressing on an imaginary foot brake; and
only 1% wanted their partners to drive faster.

I wonder who they interviewed, these things are all a load of bollocks.

Its a safety campaign to slow drivers down, so they ask specific demographic sectors who they know will give them the answers they want.

What makes you think they asked anyone?

Very true.

"Do you think banning law abiding citizens who have drove at a perfectly safe speed which someone with no sense of reality believes to be as bad as murder is a good idea?"

A. Yes, perfectly reasonable.
B. No, kill them, and their families.

They probably didn't. It's completely worthless information that serves no useful purpose. I don't seem to find my passengers anxiously trying to press imaginary brake pedals or showing any evidence of concern at all. Being seriously frightened by the behaviour of your driver is not a joke (IMHO) and I prefer to ensure that my passengers remain at ease.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I'd say the survey sounds about right .. I often press on imaginary brake pedals and fear for my life when customers try to *impress* me with their driving .. seen it all before.

I appreciate nice gentle sedate driving these days .. ahhh!

24% have felt angered by their significant other's speeding, which they think is 'irresponsible and stupid'

By contrast, 76%, which included almost all the experienced drivers, thought that the driving was fine.

20% are scared, and concerned that they and the driver could be killed or injured

Only 20%? Driving is a serious business - any of us could be killed and the fear of it helps keeps us safe.

14% worried about the safety of other road users.

86% didn't give a sh1t?

25% admit to pressing on an imaginary foot brake

I thought all drivers did that on occasion.

only 1% wanted their partners to drive faster.

95% thought that the speed was safe and appropriate. 4% thought the driver was incompetent, and were damn pleased that he wasn't rushing into danger at a higher speed.

Another totally worthless spun survey. When are they going to tell the truth?

We discussed this on a "News" story on here back in February - "Slow Down Luv"

Ahhh! They asked Raquel about Del Boy's driving and we all know what Uncle was like on his boat ....

Most of the passengers I have observed in other people's cars are asleep or appear calm... The only time I was worried was when the rep used his Handy before legislation ...

Und ob! Not one of this family has done this.

In any case - perception is different for passengers in front and rear. View of road is different - and I speak from experience of driving LH drive in EU and comment from Papa whilst driving my car over here (he is insured to do so ) It takes a little initial getting used to when you set off from ferryport .. Both ways ....

The person behind the wheel of car is more in tune with driving conditions, feel of car, speed and brakes, is engaged in co-ordination and skills (either conscious and even sub-conconscious). The passenger is not - and is not conentrating on the action of driving - so persception of speed and distance is nowhere near nor related to thaat of the driver.

My kittens are always telling us to go faster .... and once we hit derestricted A/bahn - my six year old and my four year old (fostered) note this and the "Going Turbo" from back seat is so reassuring ....

But said this last time this appeared in Feb - they would do better to invest money in training than in meaningless surveys such as this one. They ask only those they know will give right skew to participate anyway ..

And as Paulie rightly points out (as he did last time this nonsense appeared... ) - we can look at the other side of those stats - which is probably more accurate ..

Its all relative. If you get a chance, send her out with Pwiggy in his Rover. He wont drive fast but she will be terrified and consequently never complain about your driving again.

Cant speak for the "birds", (called birds cos they pick up worms..:hehe) but only for myself.

Been a passenger with a loopy colleague. Speeds were high, well over the legal limits but obviously not over the physical ones, so the speed didnt bother me one jot.
What did cause me grave cause for concern was his total lack of anticipation for possible unsafe situations, his seemingly total lack of idea of where the cornering limits of his car lie; ie, ploughing into a corner, then attempting to brake and change gear mid corner due to too much speed being carried, late braking and suicide overtakes on blind bends and brows.
That all really bothers me a lot, the speed aspect is of no concern to me at all, as its the other problems that are most likely to kill him/someone else.

thanks Street

This is total cr4p! I recently had my girlfriend, her mother and her grandmother in my car while (I may or may not have been) driving at 115. I reduced speed accordingly when approaching hazards and other motorway users. Only my girlfriend noticed my speed, and you know what? I asked her afterwards - she didn't mind at all. Her mother and grandmother didn't even notice how fast we were going.

So if you don't mind, I'm gonna treat that survey with the contempt it deserves!

Gary, I think - as someone else has pointed out - that government surveys are often manipulated in one way or another to suit the ends of the people commissioning the survey.

However, to answer the question, the feedback I get from female partners varies, even with the same person, at different times. I find that women are excited and exhilarated by being driven at speed, so long as it is done in a safe environment and they have confidence in their partner's ability.

Conversely, they find speeding unnecessarily in built up areas and busy traffic to be stupid and irresponsible.

I regularly give 'Hot Laps' (meaning fast rides, and nothing to do with oral sex! LOL) to customers at race circuits; many of the customers are women (of all ages) and I have yet to meet a woman who is not in some state of 'excitement' following such a ride, which manifests in a greater degree of attraction, obvious by the flirting, body language etc, in the driver.

In one extreme case (and I'm sure there are people who won't believe this - I was gobsmacked myself at the time! ) I took a young lady (a drop-dead gorgeous blonde too ) who was with some regular clients of mine, around my local circuit - Oulton Park - late last year in a quick sports saloon... as I turned into 'Cascades' at 100 mph, hanging the tail out, she exclaimed, "F**k me!!!" Afterwards, as we climbed out of the car, I asked if she had enjoyed it, to which she replied "I wet my knickers!"

A little later, intrigued, and concerned, I enquired "you didn't really do that did you... pee your pants? You *were* kidding?" To which she replied, "I didn't mean that... you know what I mean... I *wet* them

In the pub later on, convinced she was joking, I made further enquiries (streetcop hat on! LOL) and she was adamant that she wasn't winding me up, and had been so excited by the 5 lap high-speed ride that she had had an orgasm!

So from that I would say some ladies do find speed sexy! LOL

Hi Tim..

Hope you're ok...

Regarding the survey..I wasn't saying I agree with the findings or not...i'm just putting the subject open to discussion...like I often do..
