Speed watchers wanted (Yeovil)
Added - Wednesday, 8 September 2004 16:15
People in Yeovil are being given the chance to cut speeding on their roads.
Beat managers PC Jonathan Watson and PC Alan Ball are hoping people will take the opportunity to set up a Community Speedwatch scheme.
The scheme can be set up in any area where people are concerned about speeding and willing to give up their free time to assist the police in reducing the speed of road users.
A minimum of four people are needed for each area and they can operate in teams of two people with a speed gun.
Community Speedwatch members can record details of speeding motorists and pass the details of the vehicle to the police, who in turn will issue the drivers letters of warning.
If areas are highlighted to be of high concern then police may take more formal action.
PC Jon Watson said: “As beat officers we receive a lot of calls from members of the public who are concerned about speeding in their street or local area.
“Unfortunately we are unable to monitor all the streets in our area and we are asking for help from local residents.
“The consequences of speeding can often be upsetting, resulting in injuries and sadly, in some instances death.
“There is a fee involved to start off the scheme but local councils may have funds available for this purpose.
“Its important that everybody takes a stance against speed, not just the police.”

Bollocks. I got excited looking at the title, thinking the police would give me immunity from prosecution, a pick axe handle and a list of muggers, murderers , rapists and drug dealing scum that the courts have failed to get but deserve a life changing lesson.
DAZ
I'm disappointed in your naivete. Are you suggesting that Police should target criminals instead of scumbag motorists? Outrageous...

It makes me wonder if the Police haven't been unwittingly recruited into a government "divide and conquer" policy.
Present policy is setting road user groups against one another so very strongly that one simply has to wonder if it is deliberate.
Are our politicians smart enough? I see little evidence.

I believe that "divide and conquer" is at the heart of Government policy. I don't think it's about road user groups - I think it's a more fundamental "members of Blair's communities" vs "capitalist hierarchical c(small c)onservatives."
All the local villages round me do this
I do support stopping people speeding through villages (there's some real idiots where I live with no regard) but I don't think this is the way to do it. Some proper traffic calming (but not speed bumps) would be a better solution I think.
It's comical really seeing a bunch of pensioners (certainly the Shipham ones anyway!) in florescent jackets zapping anything that moves. If I see them in the Tiger I tend to drop it into first and cruise past at 29mph

We should get one for PH... and then nab the feckin scammers.
The police are using the public to divert the flak away from themselves. I wonder how long before a civilian is killed due to this?
Divide and conquor, you better believe this lot are smart enough. That's what makes them so very very dangerous

There was a 'vigilante posse' in Henlow, Bedfordshire, this morning with a visual speed display beside the road and two yellow jacketed peasants with clipboards. I was doing 30, but accelerated to see how high I could get their figure. I managed 42 mph and they wrote down the number of my wife's car, which I happened to be using today. It's registered to one of my companies which no longer trades (don't go there!).
If I get a letter from the old bill, it will go back requesting further and better details.
I waved to the peasants as well, just to show I'm friendly.

There have been many apparent attempts to divide and conquer.
Examples:
a) Threats to 4*4s. They pay tax on fuel used just like any other and aren't any longer of wider than most estate cars. Don't be fooled just because they are taller. That's not road space!
b) Picking on those towing caravans. (Poor lane discipline is seen in all drivers.)
c) Sports car involved in accident? ...then you'll probably see a quote of the 0-60 and top speed. This is an attempt to suggest by implication that it was the speed potential of the car that caused the accident.
Don't fall into the trap of getting divided up by picking on a section of the motoring community - support all car users when threatened by the government or their servants!

Park up down the road from them, get a yellow jacket and a hairdryer then note their number plates etc when they pack up. Go even further a get some SLOW DOWN, THINK OF THE CHILDREN sign made up so you can flash it up when they drive past.
For goodness sake this whole indoctrination and recruitment drive would be condemned if it was a religious cult
We are continually being told not to take the law into our hands and let the police and courts do their job. How much further will this go before these initiatives can be labelled vigilantism

Yes that exactly true. Not having a go at anyone really but we should be a bit more supportive of our trucker fellow drivers. With the even more stupidly low limits and dangerous limiters they have a lot to put up with. Sure we all get frustrated by Elephant Racing but some understanding helps

To make Elelphant Racing more enjoyable, have a bet with your passenger (or yourself) on
1) Will the overtake happen or will the overtaker drop back?
2) Will the overtaker try to pass the next lorry as well?
3) Will he flash his indicators or not?
Etc..
The permutations are endless.

Maybe we should all vounteer!
We could list everyone driving whilst on a mobile phone, or driving too slowly.
We could report the local undertaker, the little old dear in her moggy minor and all the locals that we don't like.
Revenge
Oh and speeders - well yes I don't agree with it in built up areas either but this is blody ridiculous...

A thinly-veiled method of justifying more cameras if you ask me. "We had to send out this many letters for this area, so it shows that there is an obvious need for a camera, all in the neighborhood hail your saviour etc."
If they can arrest trainspotters under the Terrorism Act, we can have loads of fun with this lot! I also feel a citizen's arrest for impersonating a police officer coming on as well
Anyone know where I can rent a convincing bobby uniform to give them a scare?*
*In case you're listening Mary, I shan't really be doing this. It'd be bloody funny though...

I'm very dubious of anything the British press report because they're all sensationalist lying ars
les, and i'm also VERY pro-BiB as most of you know. But if the story's true, these two BiB sound like a right pair of clowns. 'Beat managers'? Sounds like a pair of office-based numptys to me. "The consequences of speeding can often be upsetting" No, you don't say! Cheers for that pearl of wisdom....
How about saying "speeding through villages" or "inappropriate speed"? No, just "speed" will do...
As someone pointed out, how long till some idiot playing Policeman (or woman) gets killed when stepping into the road to enforce their point?
