Why don't the Police.............
Discussion
Last night it took me much longer to get home than normal - 7 miles of M1( all 3 lanes) completely bunged up and traveling at 10 mph - why?
Because a TrafPol was pulled up behind a car on the Hard shoulder!
Jamjar had blues & 2s flashing away and motorist had haz lights on.
Just why do motorists take so long in acknowledging something occuring on the hard shoulder and fail to notice they are jamming up the road?
Immediately after the incident, traffic was back up to its normal 75 - 80 mph.
Seems to happen more and more these days.
I was fuming!
Just why can't one of the police chappies get out and wave the traffic on?

Calm down!
Have you considered that maybe the road was bunged up because of a previous accident and by the time you got there the scene had been cleared leaving only the attending traffic car?
A lone police car on the hard shoulder would not cause a 7 mile tailback. Neither would it be there without very good reason.

A) The time it took to travel down that stretch was long enough to note that no ambulances/ breakdown vehicles had been to or returned from the scene.( Location of nearest A & E Hospital, etc). Motorist was with car and no damage to it. The speed of the traffic also ensured I had a good look at the state of the road and there was no accident damage to be seen.

A)You must be living in a different part of the world to the one I live in then ! Occurences like this happen quite often - it's the same as all the numpties who slow the traffic down to gawp at a proper accident whether on theirs or the opposite side of the road.
I'm sure the Police had a very good reason to be there, but that doesn't excuse drivers slowing right down just to have a gander which is my point in this.
Explain why then, once the drivers were past the police car, they all immediately whipped their speed back up to the normal average and traffic flow was back to normal? Answer, because they had slowed down to have a look at something that didn't concern or affect them and that once there was nothing more to be seen went on their merry way. Just how long does it take to note something like that and is it really neccessary to slow down to a crawl?

Get out and wave traffic on half way through dealing with someone , everytime the traffic starts to slow

I agree if you were the only one present.
I note that on similar occurences there have often beeen 2 jamjars in attendance - surely one of those jamjar occupants could do something to speed the traffic on its way?
Immediately after the incident the road ahead was clear and large gaps were developing as they then speeded up - thus the road ahead was not contributing to the tailback, but the gawpers themselves who deliberately slowed down to watch, whatever.

There are occasions when we do just that.....If we're already out of the car and doing something else, we might wave the cars along..but it rarely does much good...
It's like waving at pigeons in Trafalgar Square...they are only replaced by others, moments later...

LOL - Sorry to have a go at the BiB, but does seem to occur more and more on the Motorways today ( Don't know about the others as most of my driving, these days, doesn't take in anything but motorways)and it can be so annoying to know you've been stuck in a tailback for no real reason whatsoever. Even SWMBO has been known to lose her cool on these occasions and she's just the passenger!

Hey..David..
No offence taken mate...it pisses me off more than you if the truth were to be told..ie: i'm stationary at the roadside in danger...and also will have to deal with more RTCs as a result..
I just can't see a way around it..

I passed an accident on the southbound M1 last night (somewhere near J37/38, i think). It must have been around 9ish? Several vehicles including 1 Bib on the hard shoulder, with indeterminate damage, plus one partly on the central reservation and partly on Lane 3
Bib probably hadn't long arrived as the car in Lane 3 had no hazards on etc, although the overhead signs did warn of a lane closure.
There was some debris in lanes 1 and 2, which headlights weren't picking out (cos I hit some) and one or 2 cars parked further up the road appeared to have punctures.
Numerous people were braking in all 3 lanes and I wouldn't have been surprised if another accident occurred later.

No, this was M1 southbound at around 5pm between Leeds & Wakefield.
Must admit there's something wrong with those junctions down there - most mornings I hear of accidents/hold ups between J37 - 40 - we're now seeing a lot of traffic coming through Wakefield just to avoid those Junctions. My junction to join the M1 (41) rarely has any occurences north or southbound, mainly because it is slowed right down by the Lofthouse M62 junction traffic

I love it! If I`m at the roadside scraping up the remains of someones P&J and all the numpties are slowing for a look - thats great. I am then working in a much safer environment. Think about it Street!
