Grrr. My son and his lady friend from USA, off on a trip to Scotland, was run off the road on the A69 night before last by a prize prat who was tailgating him for several miles and then forced him to swerve to avoid being hit. Thankfully there was a layby he managed to turn in to, but he was still travelling and hit the kerb at the end, writing off 2 alloys and tyres. Thankfully they are both OK, and the car did not sustain any other damage. Sadly he was not able to get prat boys reg number, or the make of car, but is it worth reporting to BIB .

The car was recovered and transported home by RAC and I managed to get new wheels from our local(small) Ford dealer and the local tyre place fitted new tyres, balanced them and checked the tracking and steering which fortunately appeared undamaged, and we got them on their way again by 17:00 last night

I was also wondering is would steel wheels have performed any better than alloys, as looking at the damage it is the 'inner rim' that has taken the hit leaving a gap between the tyre bead and the rim.

Please don't take this the wrong way but being a 22 year old lad that's the kind of thing I would tell my dad if I had a small off and wrote of some wheels.

Now this might not be the case at all but worth considering before notifying plod.

Did said prat overtake him and force him into the layby?

It might be worth reporting to the BiB, in case the other car was involved in another accident further down the road. It could be valuable evidence. Don't expect any comeback regarding your son's incident though, unless both cars have been captured together on CCTV somewhere on the route. I can only imagine Haydon Bridge having any CCTV on the A69 between the A1 and the M6, though.

Steelies can be less brittle than alloy wheels, but they can still bend.

Again not trying to cause a stir with your son but I'm pretty sure I could convince my lady friends to back me as well in that event. Are you the scary dad type?

I'll be nice then and add balance wink

At 22 and not being a PH driving god it's possible he was flustered enough by some herbert to over react when taking a touch of avoiding action and thus lunch the wheels

He might also be spinning a yarn to cover up an excess of enthusiasm over talent. Dammit I was being nice biggrin

Because friends are always impartial, aren't they?

It may well be that the story is true. But it doesn't sound quite right to me. Since you've got the location (sort of) go on Google street view and look at the layby, it might give you some clues.

I am not at all scary, he actually is 24 and more well built than me and has a goatee.

Hmmm, run off the road by someone behind him? Were they overtaking or something? Anyway, minor harm done, nobody hurt, all good...

I know why most PHer would be suspicious (other than we are all liars of course). Most of us would automatically know what car it was.

This.

I told my dad a very similar story when I hit a curb in his car and bent a wheel and the suspension. My story involved a taxi coming the other way on the wrong side of the road biggrin
