Can't do a search on PH at the moment, but this might well have been done to death. I often see cars going through the specs average speed restrictions at well over the posted limit.

I have never once heard of anyone ever being prosecuted for exceeding the average speed though. A few years back it was suggested that if you entered the specs zone in one lane and exited in another, it couldn't 'do' you. That might not be true or it might be 'PH true' but in any case I have never ever heard first hand of anyone ever being prosecuted.

So, the floor is yours, not 'my mate's wife.....' you!

Anyone? And where and when?

100's of thousands have been prosecuted with evidence from average speed cameras.

Perhaps you just don't have enough friends. smile

Average Speed Cameras are now fully distributed systems which means "any camera in to any camera out" can be configured to detect vehicle information for journey calculations.

Equipment matching fully distributed is:
  1. SPECS3
  2. PiP's SpeedSpike
  3. RedFusion
  4. SafeZone
All fully UK Type Approved.

Hope that helps and that this is the shortest thread in the forum history. smile

Edited to add in an example of someone you may have heard of:

These were a multiple SPECS offences but reports of different hearings for the same cases:

Yes, yes that's all well and good and debunks the different camera rubbish (which I always thought was suspect) but has anyone on PH ever been prosecuted?

Jermain Defoe doesn't count. hehe

Not everyone on PH will read this thread.

I can't believe I'm about to say this because it's so obviously PH it's painful, but was the car that hit them speeding?

When you say 'way over the speed limit', how much do you mean by?

My commute for the last 2 years has included average 50mph speed limits. 59mph on my speedo is 55mph on the sat nav and i can't imagine you would ever get a ticket for doing 55mph in an average 50mph limit, so as long as you stick to under 60 on the speedo you're probably ok. That's how i look at it anyway, not that i would ever condone speeding in any way of course.

I have not been 'done' for speeding in an average speed camera zone - I have cruise control and don't fancy the points.

I do however know several people who have been 'done' (most recently on the top section of the M25) - I have seen their NIP's to confirm this.

I've represented defendends in hundreds of cases involving average speed cameras.

Then the obvious standard PH follow up question would be 'how would cameras of any description help? Driving standards more important than speed, etc etc'

I got done driving to Gatwick airport through the M1 average speed cameras in Leicestershire, speed measured at 59mph in a 50 mph average speed zone. A couple of weeks after I got the NIP I got a letter saying that they were taking no further action. No idea what that was about.

Only the minority seem to get caught, unsure if that's cos they don't work or that we're all st scared of em so remain below the limit. Me, I always stick to 5mph over the limit using my speedo. Never received a specs ticket.

Always wondered what the tolerance is for being hit with an NIP - on the A38 in Staffs, there's a short-ish stretch of 60mph limit, with three cameras - one at each end and one roughly in the middle.

I always trundle through at around an indicated 60-62 (speedo is only about 2mph out at this speed), but I'm often overtaken by cars doing what looks like >70 - I sometimes wonder if they're getting away with it, or will be getting a letter inside the next week or two. Do they know something that I don't? I'm certainly not willing to keep edging up the speed until I get nicked.

I still chuckle at the drivers that brake for the cameras though - clearly didn't pay attention in their maths classes when they were at school......

A few days after passing my test (6 years ago) I flew through a stretch of the M6 which had average speed cameras.

It was up near the Lake District and about 11pm at night (no workers). I was lost and eagerly trying to get to the next junction to turn around, however around that part, junctions are very sparse and large distances apart.

Must have done around 80-90 through about 3/4 of the 50mph section. Being pitch black, due to it being an unlit section, I failed to see the cameras.

I have no idea how I didn't get caught but I genuinely believed I was going to lose my licence weeks after getting it.

Maybe it was due to the fact that it was so dark that they couldn't read my plate properly (however being infrared I doubt that) or maybe they were old cameras and I changed lanes at just the right times. Whatever the reasons I know I was very lucky.

Those people do my head in - see them a lot in the M62 roadworks; it scares me that there are such thick people about.

Ah - this infrared business. I lift-share to Leeds from the Lancs side and we drive on alternate days and have been doing an experiment when not driving. I am not convinced that the Specs cameras work in the dark at all. If they do then why have they got those bloody great white floodlights next to one of the specs cameras, plainly there to illuminate the front of cars? I've also been doing an experiment: using a mobile phone camera you can "see" infrared light (eg. tv remote). However looking at the specs cameras in this way (where one would expect to see the IR floodlamps) shows..... nothing. I'm not convinced that all of them are connected up at all. I'm not, however, so convinced that I'm going to go tanking through them either.

I asked a Motorway Cop I was working with last year about the old "switching lanes" story and he said it WAS true. But then he could have been lying.

I got 3 points and a £60 fine in January 2008 after picking up an E36 M3 and driving it home. Avarage speed camera's were new (to me) then, I remember driving through deserted roadworks and thinking "how can those things possibly work, I'll just press on". They did work.

Dare I venture to suggest a number of these are possibly of foreign extarction ?
