Hi. Got done yesterday by a mobile gatso (2 laser beams accross the road) which was parked on a small tripod in front of an unmarked silver merc estate (A507 between buntingford and ampthill). 98 in a 60. Off to court we go....

My question : Is there any requirement for the police to place any notification that they are carrying out speed checks, such as the blud mobile 'police speed check' signs you often see on m/way speed restrictions? Or can they just get you the same way they'd ramdomly use a laser gun?

Any ideas for getting off on a technicality?

Does anyone also know of any websites that showing sentencing guidelines for magistrates to use?

I know a lot of these questions have been reaised before, but it's sometimes quite a pain to trawl through all the historic posts.

Thanks guys & gals!

Here is the Scamera partnership site listing their target locations www.drivesafely.org/mobile_locations.html

Perhaps this is what they call warning ?

I don't think warning signs are required but could be wrong ?

Sorry to hear you got caught, as I was caught in Norfolk recently by a 'safety van' on a dual carriageway.

98 in a 60? And you expect sympathy.....

Plead lunacy and a total contempt for the law.

and there is a duel carrageway 30 limit where i used to live with no pavement, was a D/C speed limit, no turnoffs and no buildings nearby...

Funnily there was usually a laser trap there.

I don't know about expecting sympathy, but if 98 mph in a 60 limit represents contempt for the law, then I also feel that contempt for it in so far as certain speed limits are concerned. Good luck, Fergus.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Many of my local NSL roads are good for cruisng at between 80-90 (And I would do more if I was in a car that was capable).

Nick,

If you open your tiny mind to assess the context of my mail, I do not expect sympathy for my actions. I am guilty of speeding. They caught me fair and square. I was doing 98 in a car which can accelerate rapidly, which was what happened at the time. I was not cruising at this speed. I merely placed the post to see if any other people had any sesnsible suggestions or had been in a similar situation.

PS However, there are a lot of pieces of UK statute for which I have no respect at all.

Thanks for your helpful and constructive reply. cretin.

cheers guys.

I'm not overly bothered by a ban as I only use my bike for racing and t/days, and I only drive for fun at the w/e.

And????????

WTF are you doing on a site like this matey. I suppose you are whiter than white and you NEVER EVER exceed the speed limit??????

Assuming the 60 is a NSL road, it is probably the safest place to speed.

I am sure 98 in a 60 is a damn site safer than 45 in a 30....

Fergus,

Sorry to hear your pain mate.

Don't know of any technicalities etc, but my one bit of good advice would be to get a good solicitor, i have had them represent me twice now for some pretty big speed offences (1 of them 102mph on the M20), and believe me, they will put your case accross alot better than you will probably be able to.

P.S. what was that guy on ???

I'm sure that there are more than a few of us PH that do these sort of speeds whithout a 2nd thought, i'm not saying it's right, but i think if you have the right tools and experience etc.......

We've all done that sort of speed at one time or another in a 60mph zone, I would imagine.

However, we all have to accept that if we are caught...we will be for the high jump and if we retain our licence afterwards, the Gods must have been favourable to us on that day in court.

Let us know how you get on Fergus..

I know that bit of road, I travel it weekly. My G/F got caught 4 months ago about 2 miles further down the road, 73 in a 60 on a Sunday morning at 8:45am going to work – in a 1.2 Corsa..!

It's possible that I was doubling the speed limit in just such zone yesterday. This message is therefore coming to you from the grave (according to the government, brake etc.) .

Mind you, if I hadn't been paying due care and attention the eejit in the Escort that pulled out in front of me may have changed that. He obviously didn't look down the 1/4 mile straight section of road, looked but didn't see, looked and saw but made no attempt to judge whether it was safe or decided that he just didn't care. You might have thought that he'd put some effort into accelerating past 20mph to help avoid the accident he seemed to be trying to cause, but no.

It's just as well some of us take account of the environment when selecting our speed really isn't it?
