Proposal for a single Police force
Discussion
A few thoughts off the top of my head.....
A)It might get rid of the likes of Brunstrum and co
B)It should mean one controlling and accountable body
C)It should mean a level playing field throught the country on Policing policy
D)It could become even more of a Government tool
E)It will probably mean even more Chiefs than Indians
F)If the police chiefs like it, there must be an underlying motive we don't know about as yet.
G) I'm suspicious of anything that this Government proposes

The sooner the better IMO. You only have to look at the recommendations of the Bichard Inquiry into Huntleys murders to see the benefits. It has been creeping in for years, perhaps starting with the Police National Computer. We now have a National Crime Squad, a National Criminal Intelligence Service, a National Intelligence Model, bodies such as HMIC - who compare BCUs nationally, PITO - Police Information Technology Organisation who look at national IT issues. Even the uniform is national, save for badges/insignias etc...
Take for example Dorset and Wiltshire, or Norfolk and Suffolk. Forces geographically next to each other, with similar demographics and Policing issues. Are people really saying they are happy for their taxes to be funding TWO sets of Chief Officers, HQ staff, training, admin etc.... Dorset and Wiltshire combined are smaller than their neighbouring forces, e.g. Hampshire.
I work near a force boundary. We do not have ready access to intelligence relating to scrotes who are out thieving cars and burgling houses - (YOUR CARS and HOUSES) because it is a separate force's IT system. It is ridiculous, the criminals know and they are laughing at you and me.
I've worked for a national (non-Police) law enforcement agency and IMO, the benefits are clear. We should be the Police Service of England and Wales.
Well alright, Wales might be taking it a bit far. Can't incorporate the Jocks, their law is different.

I think it is a great idea.
Separate police forces with different forms, working practices, and sometimes the inability to work together frankly is ridiculous.
Sooner the better in my opihion. I think it will lead to a far more efficient, cost effective organisation, but maintaining the separate regional areas, ie "South West division etc"

One benefit of a national Police service, is that Chief Constable BRUNSTROM would loose his clout. As the chief of a small force such as his, he definately would not be on the top tier of the the ladder.
There have been very recent grumplings amongst ACPO that Deputy Chief Constables in bigger forces are paid more than the Chief COnstables in smaller ones.

I am very much in favour of a national police service.
